Noble?

Saw this name today in the library and do quite like it. Made me think of what other virtue names are out there quietly simmering away.

So mumsnet chatters, can you help me crowdsource a list of virtue names, both girls and boys? Both common and uncommon welcomed.

Just to get us started:

Girls:
Hope
Grace
Constance
Prudence
Patience
Blythe
Joy

Boys (these are harder!)
Victor
Earnest
Valor
Merit

No, no and no to Noble.

Ernest with this spelling is nice, but Ernie not nice as nn.

Valor and Merit - you ARE joking, yep? They are ridiculous.

All of the girls' names bar Blythe and Patience are lovely.

It is highly likely to get shortened to Nob at school. Otherwise I quite like it.

scarletforya · 07/03/2014 22:30

It's a surname.

NationMcKinley · 07/03/2014 22:34

Imagine the school register with some of those!

"Flie-Fornication Jones?"
"Stand-Fast-On-High Maguire?"

Brilliant! Mind you, they wouldn't be MN approved names on account of the (multiple) hyphens Grin

seasaltbaby · 07/03/2014 22:38

I quite like it but not sure if be brave enough! Our DD1 has a virtue middle name & would like DC2 to have one too but undecided what it would be. Boys are much harder I agree. The only other I can think of not on that list is Endeavour.

TheSporkforeatingkyriarchy · 07/03/2014 22:53

Boys: Ardor, Constantine, Gratian (grace), Honour, Justice, Loyal, Merit, Noble, Pax, Sage, Sonder, Stellan (calm), Trust, Valour, Zeal

Would Magnus count? Justin or Justinian? Luke (light)
For girls
Alethia (truth)
Charis (grace)
Lucy (light again)

KatherinaMinola · 07/03/2014 23:00

I'm imagining a reception-aged child called Continent.

squoosh · 07/03/2014 23:16

When I think 'noble' I think high born rather than high morals. So I personally wouldn't consider it a virtue name.

Wouldn't begin to consider it as a person's name.

I think virtue names can be a lot to live up to.

squoosh · 07/03/2014 23:23

LOVE the names on Dovahkiin's list!

Makes me want to put a cloak on and join Matthew Hopkins Witchfinder General on one of his outings drowning magicky herbalists in the lake.

Dovahkiin · 07/03/2014 23:26

Small Hope sounds quite sweet really...

RalphRecklessCardew · 08/03/2014 14:03

Right. Must start TTC DC2 and call it More-Fruit. DC3 can be More-Pork.

I'm agin virtue names generally. Grace is a beautiful name and perfect for Grace Kelly or Grace Jones, but dear me I'm glad my uncoordinated self wasn't landed with it.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 08/03/2014 15:07

If-Christ-had- not-died-for- thee-thou-hadst- been-damned

I'm not sure this would fit in most forms.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 08/03/2014 15:07

RiverTam · 08/03/2014 15:10

give your child a virtue name and you can guarantee that that will be the virtue they will fail to have in spades.

sandberry · 08/03/2014 20:07

Noble reminds me of a blogger who had children called Timely Rain, Noble Song and Sagacious Star

I guess Sage would count as a virtue name. I always wanted a daughter named Rejoice, such a happy name but I don't think I could really do it.

Anjou · 08/03/2014 20:35

I don't like the sound of Noble (it reminds me of the word 'globule' which makes my skin itch). Obviously that's a problem for no one but me. I agree that he'll probably be known as Nob though, so it might be best to avoid that. Smile

In other news, DS2's first & middle names are on this thread and I've never considered either of them to be virtue names. I quite like the thought of it though. Grin

PosyFossilsShoes · 09/03/2014 12:57

I knew a man called Innocent. And I've known several people, male and female, called Blessing.

BirthdayMuppet · 10/03/2014 07:10

I don't think anyone has mentioned Inspector Morse's name yet - Endeavour. I quite like it, very strong and masculine and I can see it really working in certain circles.

RoadToTuapeka · 10/03/2014 09:16

What if the person named Noble turned out to be a liar or a thief? It's like calling a child Grace but ending up with a two left feet clumsy person who has an ironic name. I would change my name by deed pole if I were named for a virtue or character trait like that.

Comfysoft · 10/03/2014 14:21

No.

Nob connotations come to mind.
