William - Wilf?

Is Wilf a reasonable nn for William? I like to give my dc names with a long and short version. I'm not so keen on Wilfred though. Does Wilf make sense as a shortening for William or am I pushing it a bit?

Sorry, OP, I don't think it makes sense!

Onesleeptillwembley · 26/02/2014 17:47

Of course it isn't.

meditrina · 26/02/2014 17:47

Sorry, but I think it's pushing it.

Bowlersarm · 26/02/2014 17:53

No, sorry.

PotteringAlong · 26/02/2014 18:00

Just call him Wilf if you want to call him Wilf...

CleverOl10 · 26/02/2014 18:15

I don't see why not tbh. If you call him that, others will too.

MiddleEarthBarbie · 26/02/2014 18:23

Not unless he was William Francis or something.

brokenpurpleheart · 26/02/2014 18:25

Just a thought too - loads of kids will know wilf as a school thing "what I'm looking for"

ShadowFall · 26/02/2014 18:39

No, Wilf isn't a short form of William.

EirikurNoromaour · 26/02/2014 18:47

No, not at all.

DitsyDonkey · 26/02/2014 18:55

Just go with Wilf

FrumiousBandersnatch · 26/02/2014 19:13

No, it doesn't work. Sorry.

systemsmalfunction · 27/02/2014 00:07

Just go with wilf I agree.

William frank could have it as a nn

MikeWazowski · 27/02/2014 00:18

I've know a William who is called Wilf - he loves it!

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 27/02/2014 00:20

Wild is a dreadful name. What's wrong with William/Will?

yummymumtobe · 27/02/2014 00:29

I think it works. Lots of people have nicknames that aren't exact derivations.

BrianTheMole · 27/02/2014 00:32

Yes it completely works. My friends step dad was called William, aka Wilf. Said friend called her son William after stepdad, son also known as Wilf.

tammytoby · 27/02/2014 09:30

Wilfred - Wilf, Wilfy, Fred

William - Will, Willy, Liam

squoosh · 27/02/2014 11:05

Wilf definitely isn't short for William but as has been said people often have nicknames that are only vaguely related to their real name.

Why anyone would go out of their way to call their kid Wilf is beyond me though.

Rommell · 27/02/2014 11:11

Yes, I think it works - I went to school with a William who was known as Wilf. Although, I wouldn't rely on nicknames to give a name that you want - kids and teachers do all sorts of shortenings, and you don't know the one that will stick - even the kid introducing themself by the preferred shortening won't guarantee it.

IveNoIntentionOfMakingCupcakes · 27/02/2014 13:12

Hmm, bit of a mixed response (of course!) I think William, although popular, is a very lovely name so we'll choose that and see what nn sticks. I hate Willy but Billy is sweet and also, with the second name we have chosen, there is a cute possible hybrid. I still like Wilf so not ruling it out. I'm sure my toddlers will have their own thoughts too! Thanks all.
