Is it a bit girly for a boy? I can't make my mind up on it.
It would be Jesse Lee.

My very un-pc father would refer to a wimpy male as "a right Jessie". Does that help at all?

Not in Scotland! "big Jessie" is an insult here, no matter the spelling.

However, dd2 is Rachel Jessie (Jessie being my dear grandmother's given name) and she wears it with pride and actually has recently wondered about being known as Jessie!

That's a toughie. Because on the one hand I really like it. It is a sort of cowboy/Biblical name (think Jesse James) and quite American. You imagine a very tall handsome guy in a Stetson!

But on the other hand there is the unfortunate British expression 'Big Jessie' (which I have heard in England as well as Scotland). Synonymous with 'big girl's blouse'. I don't know if this expression is on its way out or not? And then you may get people trying to spelling it 'Jessie' as in the girls' name (sometimes short for Jessica).

So dunno really. And I don't know if he would get teasing, or is it becoming popular enough to stop that? It would be easy if you weren't living in the UK!

I like it. We have a few Jesse's in my London boys' school. Not necessarily uncommon here.

The 'big Jessie' insult is mentioned on all threads asking about this name because it is very much in use in regions of the UK, has been for ages and isn't going away.

No matter how lovely you think the name, if you or your DC ever move to one of those areas it will be a difficult name to live with.

I like Jesse, but not with Lee though. I think that tips it into the too girly arena as they're both unisex names and it could just as easily be Jessie Leigh.

I slightly prefer it as a girl as name as I also like its shortened version of Jess, which I think suits a girl better.

Or he could be a boy named Sue.

I still can't make my mind up with it! I really like it but I think the combination with the surname makes it really girly. If he was a really cool kid then he'd probably get away with it, but he might turn out to be a bit of a wimp and live up to his name.
Will give it some thought.

I bet no one called the Outlaw Jesse James a big Jessie! But I suppose it depends where you live. If you don't live in Scotland go for it.

I'm due in May and we're calling our baby Jesse.

Half my family are Glaswegian, and I live in a very Scottish town in England. When people mention the "big jessie" thing, we gently remind them to get fucking over it.

Ds is 9, and him and his friends think it's a cool name. When pressed how they'd make fun of a kid called Jesse, they say "um... Messy Jesse?"

Calling someone a big Jessie is kinda homophobic and quite backward so I refuse to let it affect our choosing of a lovely boy's name!

I really like Jesse for a boy. Also love Jessie for a girl. Not sure about Lee as a middle name though. I think the Jesse Lee combination is very feminine it makes me think of a lot of double barrel girls name - I know of a Stacey-Leigh, an Amber Lee and a Patsy Lee

Lee is the surname so unavoidable but we would probably put a middle name in there as well to break it up a bit.

We don't live in Scotland and I'm not too fussed about the big Jessie thing anyway, I'm just a bit unsure if it goes well with the surname.

I think Jesse Lee might sound a bit too hillbilly. He'd need to wear denim dungarees at all times.

I know a couple of boys who are Jesse. It is definitely a boys name with that spelling.

But when I say dd is going to play with Jesse, everyone assumes I mean Jessie, a girl, as Jesse is unusual.

I agree that 'you big Jessie' is an insult here (England), but really think it is old now, I am sure my kids have never heard of it.

My ds is called Jesse no one has ever called him anything other than his name. He is 19 now and it is still one of my favourite names

I have a sixteen year old Jesse.
No-one has ever, ever called him a name or thought twice about his name. The fact that someone might use it as an insult says more about them than my choice of name.
