One of the One Direction boys has become the older sibling to boy/girl twins named Doris and Ernest.

Thoughts?

Could have been worse - imagine if they'd been twin boys, Ernest & Albert Wink

I'm not a huge fan of the granny chic movement. There are some 'vintage' (Edwardian would it be?) names that are quite pretty sounding; Florence for example. However, many are clunky & ugly sounding to my ears; Ethel, Mavis, Beryl. Not nice sounds. Doris & Ernest are deep in clunky territory. Each to their own though! If they'll be known as Dolly & Ernie it's not quite so bad .

Pregnantberry · 13/02/2014 05:42

My paternal grandad is called 'Ernest', which I can't get past, but if I try and remove myself it sounds quite nice. I like the association with 'to be earnest' that I hear in my head.

Doris sounds like a name you might call your hamster or goldfish as a joke though, sorry. Grin

GertBySea · 13/02/2014 05:48

Aah they were my grandparents' names. Doris and Ernie. Definitely should stay in that era though.

glastocat · 13/02/2014 05:52

Just dreadful.

aGirlDownUnder1 · 13/02/2014 06:41

Honestly they're awful names. I can't imagine a beautiful baby girl being called Doris! Ernest isn't as bad but it's still not a great name. But congratulations to Louis's family.

MrsDavidBowie · 13/02/2014 06:45

My headteacher at junior schoool was Ernest Smelt.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 13/02/2014 06:45

I know a kid called Ernie, it's a great name. Doris will probably get shortened to Dolly which is pretty cool

glastocat · 13/02/2014 07:31

One of my relatives was Ernie Gerney. His party piece was singing 'Ernie, the fastest milkman in the west' Grin

bakingtins · 13/02/2014 07:42

Good names for guinea pigs.

TaraLott · 13/02/2014 07:44

Doris is the female Wally.

Trying to hard to be different and getting it wrong.

Bowlersarm · 13/02/2014 07:44

Awful names. There are some lovely 'old' names-these aren't.

TamerB · 13/02/2014 07:48

Poor, poor children!

UriGeller · 13/02/2014 09:46

I would have been in the Shock camp for Doris but a friend had a little girl they named Doris and the name really suits her, they mainly call her "Dore" though.

Ernest is yuck, but I guess Ernie goes along quite well with the crop of little Stanleys and Archies.

sonlypuppyfat · 13/02/2014 10:21

I have experience of these names she will end up as Doll and he will be Ern and even Big Ern, horrible.

Clawdy · 13/02/2014 12:11

Sweet old folks names - but would never in a million years choose them for babies.

Dovahkiin · 13/02/2014 12:32

Doris - similar aesthetic to Andy Capp's wife, I imagine. I hated Ernest until one of my Korean students chose it as his western name - he's made it cool somehow, a bit Pink Panther/raffish.

Innogen · 13/02/2014 23:47

Bloody awful. People on twitter are ripping the names to shreds.

NinjaCow · 14/02/2014 01:57

Ernest is sweet. I dislike Doris. It's Louis who's the sibling now? I think that's the second set of twins in the family. I can see Ernie being quite a cute nickname for a toddler.

JapaneseMargaret · 14/02/2014 03:50

I like them both. They make a refreshing change from all the usual suspects.

To be honest, I find Florence a clunky dowdy sort of name, so it's purely a matter of taste.

They are both the sorts of names that once a baby was called it, the name would very soon become accepted and normal.

I think they are ahead of the curve. Wink

MrsSchadenfreude · 14/02/2014 07:50

Utterly hideous.

ToffeeJungle · 14/02/2014 12:43

I know of siblings Doris and Ernest - they'll be in their teens now. Apparently their parents picked their names by looking at grave stones in a cemetary!!

squoosh · 14/02/2014 13:07

Wow she has loads of kids!

Louis
Charlotte
Félicité
twins Daisy and Phoebe
twins Doris and Ernest

Poor old Doris and Ernest.

OneStepCloser · 14/02/2014 13:21

Ernie, wasn't he the fastest Milkman in the West?

I don't mind them, quite sweet really.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 14/02/2014 16:18

Awful, awful. 'Granny chic' gone mad.
