Dexter..?

My boyfriend's sister came up with the name 'Dexter' for if we have a boy. She heard it from a colleague and thought it was cute, and my boyfriend agreed. (And before you say anything, she'd never even heard of the TV show!) At first I thought it was a bit too outlandish and instantly ruled it out, then it really started to grow on me! It'd be Dex for short, which I think is really cute :) But I've been back and forth-ing ever since! Can't work out whether it'd be too weird a name.. I've NEVER heard of a kid called Dexter before. Not that that's a bad thing I suppose!

What does everyone else think?

If I've looked it up properly Dexter is in the top 100 boys names at the moment (no 70) so not actually that unusual. For me I'm afraid it reminds me too much of the TV show to like it for a baby, sorry!

Morgause · 03/02/2014 06:31

I know a dog and a rat named Dexter so that would put me off.

SS3J · 03/02/2014 07:47

I like Dexter, but yes it is on the rise in popularity so you may find you end up coming across quite a few, so worth thinking about whether that would bother you or not.

Eastpoint · 03/02/2014 08:00

I know a 6 yo & a 14 yo Dexter, have never met a Dexter dog.

Dollydaydream99 · 03/02/2014 08:17

I think it's cute! Don't let others opinions put you off... it doesn't strike me as a name that will get MN approval but for what it's worth, many of the names I like don't get it either, yet many of the MN approved names I find are dreadful :) if you like it that's all that matters, no matter what name you choose, some people will love it and some will hate it!

RayPurchase · 03/02/2014 08:24

I think its very sweet, not outlandish at all. It was on our list for DS.

notso · 03/02/2014 08:36

I love it. I always liked the actor Dexter Fletcher.
Dolly daydream is right though I think, it isn't really a MN name.

I wouldn't be bothered by the TV programme comments. It isn't as if you are calling him Newsnight or Shameless Grin

aGirlDownUnder1 · 03/02/2014 09:02

I really love this name and Dex is very cute.

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/02/2014 10:13

I like it.

Know of two in real life, one is late teens and the other is around 4/5.

squoosh · 03/02/2014 11:46

I don't think it's outlandish at all, isn't it quite popular these days?

Once you have your baby you'll suddenly notice there are loads of them around.

squoosh · 03/02/2014 11:46

Loads of Dexters that is, not babies!

AprilS · 03/02/2014 14:20

I know a little Dex and hes ace! As far as I know his mum doesn't get many TV Dexter comments.

There is also this Dexter www.imdb.com/name/nm0002077/ Who I had a big crush on as a kid. To be honest this is the Dexter I think of first. ;)

thecakeisalie · 03/02/2014 16:56

I love the name which is probably a good thing as it's our ds2's name!

We had watched the show as well but as it's not the most unusual name I thought that wasn't a big connection. Not one person has mentioned the show upon hearing his name and I have yet to come across another Dexter.

He gets called Dex for short but he also gets called silly things like Moo Moo and sausage so nn's really don't always come from the name :D

I felt like it had the right balance of not being heard very much but not being too odd. I was really surprised to see it was in the top 100 when looking for names this time round.

The weirdest comment I've had about his name was when he was a baby and a cashier said 'that's a hard name' which I found odd, how do you think of a baby as being 'hard' I assume she meant like hard man either that or she found the name confusing/ hard to spell Hmm ??

Anyway great name and still love it nearly 3 years on so I'd say defiantly consider it :)

Rhubarbgarden · 03/02/2014 18:41

Not my cup of tea.

Hulababy · 03/02/2014 18:44

I know a Dexter who is a very very cute 6 month old :)

Sparklysilversequins · 03/02/2014 18:49

Dexter - serial killer. It's books and a series. Sorry but that's what I think whenever I see that name.

caz05 · 03/02/2014 19:36

I love dexter especially when it's shortened to Dex I had it on my boys list but my partner wasn't too keen. I love it though Grin

Suzietwo · 03/02/2014 20:26

I know three baby dexters and an 8 week old puppy.

If I didn't know all of them, I would like the name!

SpocksThirdEar · 03/02/2014 20:35

I love Dexter, it was always pretty high on my names lists but DH wasn't keen.

I did love Dexter Fletcher in Press Gang, which is where I got my love for the name. I haven't watched the TV series Dexter.

AK89 · 03/02/2014 23:59

Thanks everyone! This has made me feel a bit less like it's a really outlandish name that I'd get funny looks for the next 18 years for!

I know it's not gonna be everyone's cup of tea but I'm fine with that :)
