Henry, Zachary, Jacob or Alfred?

This is our shortlist for our first baby!

Henry
Zachary
Jacob
Alfred

We would probably shorten to Zach / Jake respectively at times. And Alfred would be known mostly as Freddie.

How would you rank these names?

And what other thoughts do you have on them?

I like traditional names, like Henry and Jacob the best personally x

Henry or Alfred

SauceForTheGander · 24/01/2014 12:35

Thanks for the feedback. I have to admit that Zachary is probably top of our list at the mo, so thoughts on its pros/cons very welcome.

Henry goes best with our surname, and I think it's a great name. But I have a couple of niggles: I'd like a name that I can shorten; and i can't get Hooray Henry out of my mind!

I've always liked Jacob, but worry its a bit too popular / boring.

And I love Freddie, but think it may be the name of the moment! Also, not 100% sure of Alfred (and have ruled out Frederick and Wilfred)

Henry. Can be shortened to Harry, Hank or Hal.

ToffeeJungle · 24/01/2014 19:03

In order of preference:
Zachary
Jacob
Henry
Alfred

Zac is very cool!

Henry

LadyDowagerHatt · 25/01/2014 06:38

My friend 's Henry gets Hen or Henners. It suits him. I also like Jacob (biased) - it is strong and classic and not as overused as you would think where we are.

YokoUhOh · 25/01/2014 06:46

DS is Alfred/Freddie. Everyone says how much they love it

winkywinkola · 25/01/2014 07:00

Alfred definitely.

LCHammer · 25/01/2014 07:02

Henry.

blackandwhiteandredallover · 25/01/2014 07:05

Zachary is a great name and I can't think of the last time I met one! Henry and Alfie are pretty popular round here.

Bowlersarm · 25/01/2014 07:06

Zachary for me.

But I wouldn't worry about the Hooray Henry thing. If you use Henry, that association will soon go.

cafecito · 25/01/2014 07:08

Henry

hubbahubster · 25/01/2014 13:33

I have a Zachary and have never regretted our name choice. He's Zach most of the time and has no problem saying/understanding that both versions are his name (rather than eg Alfred nn Freddie, which begin differently) and he's 2.5 now. Now I'm having problems finding a name I love anywhere near as much for DD!

FWIW we haven't come across any others which means we've avoided the Zach A, Zach B etc stuff, which was one thing we really wanted.

Purplegirly · 25/01/2014 13:36

I have a Zach and everyone loves it. He is also gorgeous

Hawknotdove · 26/01/2014 17:16

Thanks all! We are still confused. But lots to ponder...

I like all of them!

Jacob is a really nice classic name. Henry is nice too, and I don't think it has such a "hooray Henry" connotation these days.

Zachary is OK, although I prefer Jacob and Henry.

If you're not sure of Alfred I'd rule it out.
