Jem or Ari?

Beegey · 20/01/2014 13:44

Dh and I had finally settled on Jem but then herd Ari at the Weekend and I think I might love it...

Only feelings against it is that we have a surname ending in 'y' and already have Asa - are they too similar?

Jem would just be Jem rather than Jeremy or Jeremiah.

Both are lovely imo. Both go well with Asa but can't comment on the surname as it depends what it is. Ari might get people thinking he's a Harry and mis-spelling it but tbh I don't think that's a good enough reason to not choose a name you love. My name has been misspelled all my life. Just amuses the family.

DancingLady · 20/01/2014 14:06

I thought Ari was a girl's name (nn for Ariadne). And agree it'll just sounds like 'Harry' with a dropped H.

EducatingNora · 20/01/2014 14:09

I have a Jem. Lovely, lovely name.

JanePurdy · 20/01/2014 14:24

I wouldn't go for Asa and Ari to be honest, seems a bit too close somehow? But I am biased as I LOVE Jem - we call my brother Jem, short for Jeremy in his case, & it is one of my absolute favourite names.

NigellasDealer · 20/01/2014 14:26

Jem is really cool but Ari just sounds like 'arry

Misspilly88 · 20/01/2014 20:54

I know an Ari.... Sounds like someone shouting Harry...'ere 'arry!

LittleYellowDuck · 21/01/2014 07:37

I thought Jem was a girls name , it made me think of Jem and the Holograms
I think Ari sounds feminine too

Artandco · 21/01/2014 07:39

The Ari I know is Spelt Arisis. I suppose in English that's
'ah-ris' with nickname Ari

Spaghettinetti · 21/01/2014 08:04

What about Ares? That way you could call him
Ari as a nickname...

UriGeller · 21/01/2014 08:10

Ari can be nn for Aristotle. Very grand! Jem I find a bit fey for a boys name.

Vajazzler · 21/01/2014 08:17

I assumed you were expecting a girl. To me Jem is female as pp said Jem and the holograms. When I read Ari the first thing that sprung to mind was Ariella.

newyearhere · 21/01/2014 10:23

Jem is too nicknamey and if I saw it written down might assume it was short for Jemima.

Ari is great though.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 21/01/2014 10:37

Jem is a great name. I'm not sure I would use it as a standalone name though. I like it for Jeremy. Ari is nice but not with Asa.

Beegey · 21/01/2014 11:23

Thanks for the comments.

Aw, man! This is tricky. My biggest worry is that Ari sounds silly withour surname.the more I think about it,other than being a short, A name it doesn't sound like Asa as Asa is ay-sa and Ari is arr - ee. I don't even think it sounds like Harry, particularly.

I am now considering Ariel with Ari as a nn. It means Lion of God and although not popular here, it is a very popular Israeli name, common in the US too, and I like the Shakespeare connection...

I do like Jem but I agree with Newyear - it does sound like a nn and somewhat incomplete. Dh loves it.

Although very cool, Aristotle might sound a bit full on and is a Greek name of course. We are not Greek in the slightest but my family are Jewish (though non practicing ).

Aryeh is Hebrew for lion

In many languages Ari means eagle

I like Aries, Aris, Adrian as long names maybe. Otherwise most are Greek

Zeyneps · 15/03/2015 13:07

I have a 12 year old boy Jem, it suits him a lot and he is not a girly boy. Ari is a lovely name too, especially in Turkish, it means a bee, so I should keep that in my for future grandchildren :) I myself would sound the first 'A' as 'U' n umbrella though.

Penguinotterfoxbadger · 15/03/2015 13:31

Ariel or Aryeh nn Ari are both great.

I love Jem but prefer it as a nn for Jeremiah

squoosh · 15/03/2015 17:23

Jem can be short for James too.

I'd assume Ari was short for Ariel, I'd also assume Ari was Jewish. I think Ari and Asa together is a bit matchy.

TheTravellingLemon · 15/03/2015 18:39

I like Ariel, Ariella is on our girl's list

rockinrobintweet · 15/03/2015 20:41

both gorgeous! I think I like Jem as a sibset with your dd.

Grantaire · 15/03/2015 20:44

Adore Ari. Fabulous name but with your names, I'd go with Jem. Also fab!

shakemysilliesout · 15/03/2015 22:13

Jem 100%.
