Nicknames for Mariella?

I really love the name Mariella, just as it is, but I am aware of mine and others' tendency to adopt nicknames, and wondered what they might be?

There is obviously Mari or Ella, but what else comes to mind when you see/hear this name?

Thing is, Mariella is a nickname, for Maria because it means Little Maria!

All the Mariellas I know are Maria really.

But I tend to end up calling them Mari which I quite like. Smile

I like the name Mariella, although I would spend my whole time singing it a la Kate Nash. And telling her not to glue her lips together.

As for nicknames, Mari and Ella would be the first I would think of, Mari being the more natural one. Maybe Riella or Ree?

I know a 6yr old marianne and we call her min which is sweet.

My cousin is a Mariella who used the whole name all her childhood, and it seems only since her uni days it has become Stella!!??

insanelycheerful · 15/01/2014 20:20

Good point, Drank! I am not that keen on Marie/Maria, which may seem odd given that I LOVE Mariella! Also not that keen on Mari for some reason. And OH is not so keen on Ella. So am starting to wonder if I should avoid Mariella altogether as they would be obvious shortenings.....

There are so few girls names I really LOVE though. At the moment my 2 favourites are Mariella and Emma. Quite different I know.

This name lark is quite tricky isn't it!

You've made me chuckle, TheZee!

Blue - you've made me realise I also think Marianne is a lovely name! And I love Min as a nickname!! Thank you :-)

How strange Yorky! Stella is nice but I do find Mariella so very pretty....

My Marianne's nickname is Minnie. Love the name Mariella too.

ginzillas · 15/01/2014 21:14

Think Marnie could also work as a nickname for either Marianne or Mariella.

insanelycheerful · 15/01/2014 21:41

Minnie is great, ginzillas!
Do you think it works for Mariella too? Marianne has the "n" sound that Mariella doesn't....
Along the same lines I guess Millie would work for Mariella, but Millie is quite popular these days for Amelia etc. (I do like Millie though).

Millie probably feels a bit more natural as a nickname for Mariella. But I think you could wait to decide on a nickname once she's here and see what fits her. Mainthing is whether you love Mariella. I think it's beautiful!

Light100 · 16/01/2014 10:22

I know a Mariella and she gets called Mimi by her parents which I love!

insanelycheerful · 16/01/2014 19:34

Gin you make a very good point re waiting till she is here. To be fair I don't know if I'm having a boy or a girl yet (only very early days and we won't find out the sex anyway). We have 2 boys and I know that with both we have attributed our own funny nicknames after they've been born, so am sure this one will be the same!

All the pondering and seeing Mariella written down on my threads has only served to reinforce how much I love it Smile

Light I had wondered about Mimi as a nickname as I also think it's great. I was waiting to see if anyone would suggest it, to see if it made sense!

Ooh, actually, we'd planned on Mimi but when Dd was born we started calling her Minnie instead and it stuck. Both lovely though.
