Horrific names from your family tree

We have been working a little bit on DH's family tree lately. There are some Hmm names in there but none more horrific than a little boy in the 1800s named Ethelbert who grew up in East London.

Have you come across any in your family?

Eugene who didn't like his name and went by his middle name of James. He then called his son Eugene!! Who also didn't like his name and went by his middle name too! Crazy!!

Amos

Rhuba · 14/01/2014 22:37

Oh yes how could I forget Fanny.

cremolafoam · 14/01/2014 22:39

My cousin married someone called Gaye. She's not had an easy time of it.

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 14/01/2014 22:39

I have a Mahala too, but didn't mention it as it seems almost mainstream these days.

Trubloff · 14/01/2014 22:40

Not my family - although many of them should have been...!

Found quite a few Bastard families whilst transcribing census records. The 1861 in particular. Although later transcribers want to pretend it says something else. It doesn't. Check Ancestry! Very happy that the surname has dropped out of popularity tho!

Patience, Defiance & Cinderella!

elQuintoConyo · 14/01/2014 22:54

I have a DBil named Adolfo. Doesn't get more awful than that! Delightful man, though, and I suppose the F and the O soften it somewhat.

My DSil is Maria Paz = Maria of Peace.

Not sure about my own family tree, I shall have to ask my mother.

cowsarescary · 14/01/2014 22:59

My grandmothers were Gladys and Gertrude.

My grandmother Gladys's relations were Wombles (of Derbyshire, not Wimbledon Common).

That's it.

In awe of the IIjkk's family tree.

Fantail · 14/01/2014 22:59

stella69x - were Patience and Defiance related? I wonder if they lived up to their names?

We have a Louis III! We're not even Royalty! Grin and we're from a smoky old North West town and are decidedly working class right up to where I stopped looking...about 1799!

We have a Kezia which I quite like, an Orsini and a Watkiss. Five generations of Roshanna.

I have a sampler made by a ggg grandmother called Honora Plant. She stitched beautifully, I always pictured her in the nursery with a governess - the census shows her working down a mine at the age of eleven.

trice · 14/01/2014 23:09

Another family name - Jabez

Amandine29 · 14/01/2014 23:10

We have some odd names such as Olivet (no idea where the T came from) and Almena but it's mostly Johns and Marys in my family.

Purplelooby · 14/01/2014 23:19

We found a male called Zimri which is very obscure biblical name. DH found an Octavius Eugene which is both cool and awful at the same time...

He also has an Adelaide and wants to call our DD, due in 9 weeks, after her. Hmmm, not happening.

Purplelooby · 14/01/2014 23:21

Rhuba my DS is an Amos.

Mikkii · 14/01/2014 23:21

DH has an ancestor whose name was Espantaleon which translates to lion scarer. We so wish we had known about that when naming DS.

Quinto, we have a cousin who is Maria Del Mar (Maria of the sea) who is referred to as Ria Ria by the sea-a!

tracyandeli · 14/01/2014 23:26

Dp has an uncle helmet Grin German I think.
