Theodora?

Hi all, hoping for some opinions on the above please! Our poor baby girl is 9 days old and still no name yet Sad

We were going to go for Ophelia but my DH has had a change of heart as there are no nice nns for it, and we were concerned about teasing ie oh give us 'Ophelia' bum etc. also the negative connotations from hamlet.

We loved it as it's such a 'pretty' name. Is Theodora pretty? W love the nns Teddy and Theo.

Do you know any Theodoras?

Any opinions at all on this?

Thanks!

I think it's a pretty name!

hackneybird · 13/01/2014 22:25

I love it, and I love the nn Thea. I'd like to use it but DH not keen.

invicta · 13/01/2014 22:26

I think Robbie Williams has named his baby Theodora.

TheSlug · 13/01/2014 22:30

Invicta, you're right, he did. Does that make it a bad idea in your opinion?

I love it. RW calls his daughter by the nn Teddy if I can believe all I read. It was on our list but it didn't go with our surname. TheRWs association is offputting right now as his daughter is still so young but in a few years, I doubt it will be an issue.

Wishfulmakeupping · 14/01/2014 01:56

Very pretty love the nn Thea

NigellasDealer · 14/01/2014 01:58

it is a lovely name

emmyloo2 · 14/01/2014 07:06

I really like it and considered it for my daughter. The only issue I had was whether I would feel comfortable calling the name out in the park and whether it would feel poncey. However, it's a great name. I don't think Robbie Williams calling his daughter it should be an issue. We also considered Isadora. I really like the nickname Dora.

NigellasDealer · 14/01/2014 08:04

plus as i am sure you know it means 'God's gift' which is lovely - I did know a Theodora I think she was Serbian.

Spaghettinetti · 14/01/2014 09:43

A great name...I suggested it to DH the other day but he wasn't too keen. I love the scope for nicknames, you could have Thea, Dora or even Dotty! :-)

invicta · 16/01/2014 08:06

What about Dorothea as an alternative option? It means gift from a God.

whereisthewitch · 16/01/2014 08:11

Lovely and the name of a great byzantine Empress.

HyvaPaiva · 16/01/2014 08:27

It's beautiful! As a diminutive of Theodora, I'd use Thea not Theo (that's the male version). Both Theodora and Thea are really lovely and far nicer than Ophelia, I think.

fuzzyduck234 · 16/01/2014 10:40

It's a lovely name and i considered it for DD1 but DH says he doesn't like it so can't use it :(

squoosh · 16/01/2014 11:05

Personally I find Theodora a bit haughty and solemn but I love the nicknames Teddy and Thea.

Only1scoop · 16/01/2014 11:06

Beautiful love it Smile

MrsMarigold · 16/01/2014 11:07

I went to school with a Theodora - Dora is also pretty as a nn.

ElizabethBathory · 16/01/2014 14:54

Love Theodora, it's pretty and strong. Dislike nn Teddy though. Thea's nice, but love Theo (I know it's a boys name but seems a legit nn for Theodora to me :)).

pinkpeoniesplease · 16/01/2014 15:00

It's lovely, I like Thea and Dora is cute also. I also like Dorothea.
RW doesn't exactly flaunt his daughter in public so I doubt many people know her name.

What other names do you like OP?

Mabelandrose · 16/01/2014 15:10

Ilove if op

TheSlug · 18/01/2014 17:34

Thank you so much everyone, it seems silly but all of your advice has helped me make the decision and go for it :) so pleased!

Gorgeous name and lots of options to nnSmile

Beckett3 · 22/01/2014 19:12

DD3 who's 6 months old is named Theodora, we call her Teddy and I've had nothing but compliments about it. Funnily enough she was 9 days old when I really started considering it as a name for her as it really did and does suit her.

DalmationDots · 22/01/2014 23:36

Love it, it is my favourite name. Wish we thought of it when DD was born.
Nns include Thea, Teddy, Dora.
Don't think there is anything wrong with the RW link, it isn't a hugely uncommon name, RW is great and not a bad association.
