DD1 is Ella Rose... along with the rest of the population :-)

DD2 - is shortlisted to be Ruby May (will be born in May).

I know I know I know they are all really really common. but we don't actually know any... until I realised childminder looks after 2 sisters Ellie & Ruby and neighbour has just told me that next door to her there are sisters Ellie & Ruby.

it's making me (not to mention hubby's outrage) think again... opinions please. Thinking Holly May might just win this one now....

Well, Holly is a great name.

MrsRV · 10/01/2014 08:14

Grin now that was tactful!!!

MrsRV · 10/01/2014 08:17

oh... not to mention that also, Ruby & Ella sounds like rubella.

Ella is different to Ellie.

Ella is much nicer. Smile

If you go for Holly, I wonder if you will feel like you didnt use your favourite name and feel shortchanged.

Any chance you like Scarlet? (Different shade of red!) Smile

SS3J · 10/01/2014 08:26

Obviously the popularity depends on where you live, but in case you are interested, Ruby was ranked 12 in 2012 and Holly 25. I suspect that that is a small enough difference in rankings that it won't make much difference to how many you come across. So might be best to either just pick the one you prefer, or look for a much more unusual name. Good luck!

HomeHypno · 10/01/2014 08:32

Holly May sounds really nice. Then again, your children won't be the kids next door all their lives - I am sure they will spend their adult lives apart enough not to be confused with all the other Rubys and Ellas all the time. Just pick a name you really love, and one thatvreally suits the little person that pops out.

Theonlyoneiknow · 10/01/2014 09:40

What HomeHypno said choose the name YOU love, don't compromise if you and your DH both love Ruby.

Theonlyoneiknow · 10/01/2014 09:41

FWIW I only know one Ruby, no Ellas and no Hollys

MrsRV · 10/01/2014 10:54

we do like Scarlet yes! it's also on the list but I know we will shorten it to something awful....

Lebkuchenlover · 10/01/2014 11:12

Ruby & Ella does sound too close to Rubella!

Ihatepeas · 10/01/2014 12:37

I think the rubella thing would bother me a lot more than anything else..

I think Holly is lovely!

secretsofsanta · 10/01/2014 12:39

I wouldnt worry, although Holly May a great name --biased-. I havent come across many Hollys.

Thants · 10/01/2014 12:47

Ruby is such a popular name, not sure why.. Holly is nicer and slightly less common. How about just giving her one first name? The second one will never get used anyway.

CuntWagon · 10/01/2014 13:04

I also know an Ella and Ruby sister combo Grin

thegreylady · 10/01/2014 14:29

Could you possibly lose the May?

gruffalosfriend · 10/01/2014 14:31

Definately not Ruby & Ella Grin.

Personally I think Holly is a little too cutesy but if you like it, then why not?

gruffalosfriend · 10/01/2014 14:32

Or Sam and Ella!

MrsRV · 10/01/2014 17:46

had to re-read Sam & Ella several times before I understood Grin

OP posts:
ZingChoirsOfAngels · 10/01/2014 18:00

so the choices are Salmonella, Rubella or Scarlet (Fever)?
I'm going to suggest Mumps then! Grin

Holly is lovely, Ruby is lovely, Ella is lovely.
if you like the name ignore who else has it (apart from Adolf) and go for it!

Mrswellyboot · 10/01/2014 18:07

Go for your favourite name. I would probably not go for Ruby May though either. Have heard that a lot.

BackforGood · 10/01/2014 18:17

Are you fixed on ___ May ?
I always thnik it sounds like the start of a sentence.

ChristineDaae · 10/01/2014 18:18

I think Holly is much nicer than ruby (sorry)

Frikadellen · 10/01/2014 18:18

Both Holly and Ruby are very popular I know 4 Holly's under 10 and 3 rubys (and 5 Ellas) So I really don't think it is going to matter if you have Ruby or Holly so go with the one that suits baby when Baby comes out..

(And you know now its going to be a boy dont you laughs - if so Dont go for Ruby OR Holly)

Choose the name you like best. I don't think it matters that much about what neighbours call their children.
