I love my best friend's name, Lydia, and it's variants like Lidia, Lidie, Lydie etc. but don't like the thought that the two would get mixed up. It'd be a bit confusing I think. Any ideas?

I don't think it would be confusing to name your daughter Lydia if you want to, your friend would be flattered and you would easily find ways of identifying which Lydia you mean in conversation. Once your daughter starts playgroup, school etc most of your contact will be with people who don't know your friend and there will be no confusion at all.

That said if you don't want to use it but would prefer to find something with a similar feel then how about;
Esther
Eleanor
Anna
Libby
Tabitha
Miriam
Juliet
Thea
Elsa
Audrey

All the girls called Lydia where I teach tend to have friends called Olivia, Ellie, Lucy and Isobel ..... (There are quite a few of each!).

What about Lorna as an alternative.

Agree that there's no reason not to use Lydia if you want to.
