Casper/Caspar

I've looked up previous threads on this name and lots of Mumsnetters seem to prefer the Caspar spelling. I generally think it makes more sense to go with the most popular spelling of a name and as Casper is currently number 346 and Caspar is number 606 I thought Casper would be the sensible option. Why do people prefer Caspar?

Also Kacper is number 172 but I'm guessing this is maybe a Polish variant?

I prefer Casper. I know one (40yrs) and he is lovely.

youbethemummylion · 01/01/2014 18:49

Casper or Kasper actually prefer the K version and im not Polish

LynetteScavo · 01/01/2014 18:52

I know a Caspar, and people usually write Casper, much to his parents frustration.

I have no preference either way.

BananaHammocks · 01/01/2014 18:53

Kasper is number 592 so that's 3 versions that are more popular than Caspar, there just seem to be a lot of people on Mumsnet that preferred Caspar on previous threads and I don't know why!

I think Casper is better, surely this is he anglicised name and Caspar is Germanic?

TravellingToad · 01/01/2014 18:55

I'd say Casper is the normal spelling but TBH I've no idea!

Rosencrantz · 01/01/2014 18:56

I'd use Casper, but only because the only one I know is the ghost, and this is how he spells it.

CarrotCakeMuffins · 01/01/2014 18:57

I know a Caspar, and as far as I know, his name gets spelled correctly.
Either way, it is a lovely name.

OhCaptainDarling · 01/01/2014 19:05

Casper was one of the 3 wisemen, Caspar was the ghost!

HTH Wink

BananaHammocks · 01/01/2014 19:07

No, the ghost is Casper!

Bugger I think it got it the wrong way round...anyway......

Caspar is the better spelling IMHO!

WhispersOfWickedness · 01/01/2014 19:11

I love Casper/Caspar! I wanted it but DH couldn't get past the ghost association Sad

BananaHammocks · 01/01/2014 19:12

But do you not think the most popular spelling would make more sense? I don't have any preference but I thought the most popular spelling would be the easiest as it will, most likely, be how people expect it to be spelled?

Why do you prefer Caspar?

OhCaptainDarling · 01/01/2014 19:49

I prefer Caspar as my friend has one, simple as that!

CarryOnDancing · 02/01/2014 11:55

I prefer Casper because I'd pronounce it that way. To me, Caspar would be pronounced differently.

Mabelandrose · 02/01/2014 12:14

Casper

pygmy · 02/01/2014 14:28

Caspar is the original spelling. Looks stronger with the a too.

BuffyxSummers · 02/01/2014 14:34

I prefer Casper because the Caspar spelling just looks odd to me.

whippetwoman · 02/01/2014 19:59

My brother is Caspar. Lovely but increasingly popular name. I know three.

SS3J · 02/01/2014 22:26

I prefer Caspar because to me it looks nicer. And also because Casper is the ghost, and if I was naming a child I would try to separate it slightly from that (even though that might still be what everyone thinks of!) I really like Caspar but my DP vetoed it :-(

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 03/01/2014 05:45

DS is Casper as I think it fits the English pronunciation better.

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 03/01/2014 06:15

Oh and btw, if 346 seems in that hallowed land of unusual but not totally random, I should warn you that DD's name was around there when she was born, and her name is now top ten. This may not be a concern for you at all, but I thought I would mention it :)
