I'm only 13 weeks but we are starting to trim down the quite long list below to a short list and I'm interested in the MN view of these names.

We have a very unusual (in the UK anyway) Eastern European surname, passed down by my husband's grandfather. So we want an English name that's easy to spell and probably short is better too.

I'd love any new suggestions too.

Girls
Chloe,
Lily,
Daisy,
Isabella,
Georgina,
Rosie,
Arriane,
Holly,
April,
Heather,
Sennen,
Alana,
Molly,
Tia,
Lorna

Boys
Joseph,
Joshua,
Nicholas,
Jake,
Curtis,
Oscar,
Otis,
Archie,
Isaac,
Finn

My favourites are Holly Nicholas and Otis.

I really don't like Sennen. It makes me think of laxatives or constipation medicines for some reason.

ToffeeJungle · 29/12/2013 19:20

My favourites are Chloe and Joseph.

Also like Daisy (though it is a bit cutesy) and Isaac.

Dont like Tia or Otis.

LauraChant · 29/12/2013 19:30

My favourites are Georgina and Rosie (but I would use this as a nn for Rose or Rosamund, not saying you have to!) and Jake (which I would use as nn for Jacob) and Joshua.

Oubliette0292 · 29/12/2013 19:44

Thanks all, very insightful. I think Sennen is now off the list then! (I wasn't sure but husband is quite keen so will have to put my foot down.)

I like Ella scaevola and also would have liked Max but a very good friend is called that.

Chloe--not a fan, too popular
Lily--pretty but ubiquitous
Daisy--to cutesie for my taste
Isabella--Twilight and ubiquitous
Georgina--love this, especially Georgie for a nickname
Rosie--very cute, though only as a nickname; needs a full version
Arriane--pretty
Holly--feels very 80s to me
April--blech
Heather--dated, very 80s (see the film 'Heathers')
Sennen--never heard it but I like it!
Alana--meh... you could do better
Molly--cute
Tia--not a fan
Lorna--not a fan

Not really a fan of most of your boys' names, mostly just because they're a bit too boring and safe for my taste (with the exception of Otis, which I dislike because it sounds like 'oats', and Oscar, which feels to me like an overused hipster name). I do like Isaac and Archie, though!

MoonHare · 31/12/2013 12:59

Considering your ideas based on the criteria you want to apply; English, short and easy to spell

Chloe - OK bit over used
Lily - soooo many of them no
Daisy - too cutesy
Isabella - again super popular, especially when you consider all the similar Isabel, Isabelle, Isobel etc and it's not short
Georgina - Classic, not hard to spell, not short though
Rosie - definitely easy to spell
Arriane - not English sounding and there would be spelling issues I think
Holly - was very popular 10-15 years ago probably less so now, easy to spell
April - bland
Heather- quite nice
Sennen- It's not a standard name so there would be spelling issues
Alana - not English sounding and again spelling issues Alannah, Alanna etc etc
Molly - Definitely English sounding and very easy to get the spelling right, this might be the one for you based on your criteria
Tia - not classically English at all
Lorna - It's OK, it always sounds a bit mournful to me

Joseph - nice, straightforward
Joshua - sooooo over used
Nicholas - could be due a come back
Jake - short, easy to spell it's quite popular though
Curtis - not English sounding but short and easy to spell
Oscar - Better than Curtis if you want something easy to spell but a little more unusual than your other ideas
Otis - Fits in terms of short and easy to spell but feels American
Archie - Too cutesy
Isaac - Better than Joshua if you want to go down the biblical route
Finn - Might get spelling issues, more Irish than English sounding

From your lists I like Georgina and Oscar best but based on your own criteria Molly and Jake fit the bill.

Other ideas;
Lucy
Polly
Anna
Beth
Amy
Anita

Toby
Seth
Jacob
Peter

I know you don't want to say, but it depends on your surname. A lot of Eastern European names have very convoluted spelling and even pronunciation which could clash with some of your list. What sounds good to you?

RaRa1988 · 01/01/2014 16:56

From your list, I think:

Girls
Chloe: ugly to my ears
Lily: don't like the 'sticky' sound of it
Daisy: bit old-fashioned, bit pretty
Isabella: sorry, hate this one. Isabel is bad enough, but the extra syllable makes it really clunky and grandiose.
Georgina: ugly to my ears
Rosie: beautiful name; one of my all-time favourites
Arriane: pretty and different
Holly: wouldn't be my choice, but I do like it
April: If she's born in April (and I'm assuming she won't be as you're only 13 weeks!), fine. If not, no.
Heather: no strong feelings either way
Sennen: too much like the laxative. What about Sorren instead?
Alana: HATE this with a passion! Sorry.
Molly: Ok, though some may say too childish for when she grows up
Tia: HATE this with a passion too.
Lorna: Quite pretty and different

Boys
Joseph: Not for me, and I don't like Joe either
Joshua: Not one of my favourites, but a good name
Nicholas: No strong feelings either way, but bear in mind he'll quickly become Nick
Jake: Really like Jake
Curtis: Don't like this at all
Oscar: Only suitable for cats or, if you absolutely must, dogs
Otis: NO!!!
Archie: Ok, preferable if you're either posh or Scottish
Isaac: Too biblical for me, but nothing wrong with it
Finn: Don't like it

As for other ideas, what about:

Girls:

Sarah
Anna
Beth/Bethan/Bethany
Sorren
Emily
Jane/Jayne
Sophie
Vienna

Boys:

Thomas
Toby
Rafe
