Confused about names I like...

8 weeks ago me and DH found out we were having a boy and we still haven't come up any names we both like.

The weird thing is that 2 names I like are ones that generally don't get a good reception on MN for specific reasons so I'm scared that they are ones I like. The other name I like probably won't go down too well either Grin

Tyler : Referred to at times on MN (not by me) as being 'chavvy'

Harrison - One of the dreaded 'surname-y' names

Joey - Too bird like or reminds you of a baby kangaroo???

DH thinks that when people hear the name Joey they instantly think of Joey Essex but I don't necessarily agree and I think the name is lovely Smile

Harrison I can cope with, just.
Joey is a NN and Tyler I really do think people will judge, sorry.

Names are such personal things. Some people will have certain associations (horrid people from school who had a particular name, or a prominent person on TV). Some names are more 'popular' in some areas and depending on where those areas are, I guess that's why some people use the label, 'chavvy'. It depends where you are and your social circles, I guess. Same goes for when people say a name is 'pretentious'. It might be for one person, but not for another.

For me, Tyler is very American sounding. It's not my cup of tea, I imagine some people might turn their nose up at it, but only idiots would make an assumption about someone based solely on their name.

Harrison is nice. It's been used as a first name for ages and can easily be shortened to Harry if you, or they, prefer.

Joey for me is a little boys name. Not really suitable for a teenager or a man. Obviously though, you've got options for a full name with joey as a nickname: Joseph, Jonas, Jonah ... As far as associations go, I don't know who joey Essex is. I'd think more joey from friends or - for some reason - budgies??!! Was there a famous budgie called joey?! I've no idea why I think that!

Anyway, everyone will have an opinion. It's good to canvas opinion but ultimately, go for a name you love

Harrison and Tyler are really popular and you might find ds is one of many, if that's a consideration.

I like Joey a lot, I know a female one and it sounds nice as a name.

If you like a name that is what matters, not the opinions of a select few on these boards. My DS name has been utterly slated here (Kyle) but we love it which is why we chose it.

It can also be region dependent. None if those names you listed have negative connotations where I live. I don't see the problem with surnamey first names but it has always been popular and traditional in Scotland to do that (where I am)

My favourite of your list is Harrison. DS was nearly Harris which is a beautiful Scottish island so also a possible nn for Harrison.

If you like Joey, what about Joel?

Joey is a nick name and was the name of my granny's budgie....
Harrison often shortened to Harry which although popular is a lovely name I think.
Tyler .....not so much
At the end of the day though just go with what you like. What others may not like or think 'chavvy' you may really want. It's you and child that has to enjoy the chosen name....not everyone else.

Op, go with the name you like. I loved Dr's name years before I had her. Then I discovered Mr and found out that it was one of the least popular on here. We gave her another name and for two days later was depressed. The name didn't suit her so Dh finally said, this baby is not a Sierra, can we not name her the name you have always loved. I have never been so relieved. We gave her our original name Isabella and she is one of two Bella out of 85 kids at her nursery. She is always being complimented on how gorgeous her name is. Forget Mumsnet and just use the name you want

Personally I would go for Joseph, but call him Joey, you can then change this to Joe/Joseph if Joey doesn't fit.

Not a fan of Tyler.

Harrison is nice, but I prefer Harris.

Joey is nice, but I would actually name him Joseph and use Joey as a nickname.

Tyler, hhmmm. Not my favourite, but then it's not my child.
Harrison - yes quite nice, but first though it Harrison Ford.
Joey. No idea who Joey Essex is, so wouldn't see that as a problem. But do agree that Joseph as his full name would give more flexibility later in life.

Joey is definitely best, but have it as a nn for a longer name. Joseph is the classic: a friend's little boy is this and is currently Joey or Joe. But you could have Jonah, Jonas, Josiah, Joel - lots of choices!

Then when he grows up he can either use the full name, go for the slightly more adult Joe, or even stay as Joey.

My two dc's might as well be called "boring" and "popular" by mn standards, do I give a rats ass, no! They're using their outstanding personalities, quick wit and beautiful looks to set themselves apart from the crowds, lol

Fwiw, I don't like Tyler or Harrison, I like Joey but would give him a Sunday name too.

My little brother is called Joseph but we've called him Joey since day 1. Occasionally he moonlights as Joseph at work but he's really Joey to us.

Tyler- if you like it go for it, it always makes me think of history (watt Tyler)

Harrison- Harry or Harris are really nice nn

I would personally go for Joseph ( as it's the best boys name ever) and have Joey as nn

I did contemplate just Joe but our surname is only 1 syllable so I would worry his name would be very blunt and short....

i see joey more as a nickname; would you consider joseph or joel as formal name but always call him joey?

i really dont like tyler, i just think of someone putting tiles on a roof (yes i know spellings different and the occupation would be roofer not tiler but i just cant help it!)

harrison im not wild on but thats me.

choose what YOU like. mn is helpful in picking what you love because you still love it when it gets slated; just bin names that public opinion sways you on!

Congratulations, wee boys are fab ( slightly biased as I have 2 ds :) ) my friend has a wee one called Harrison and that's what everyone calls him, it doesn't get shortened, it may do when he's older but I think it's a lovely name
