Amelia.

Chosen this for dd2. I know on paper it's very popular but the only one we know is my cousin's 11yr old daughter who I've met half a dozen times and is known by a nickname instead. They live about 50 miles away.

That side of the family is huge. This will be my gran's 13th great-grandchild. Dp insists my cousin doesn't own the name so can't get uppity. We love it and already refer to bump as Amelia.

So is it wrong to "copy"? It's not like the name is Esmeralda or Rapunzel or something else unusual.

you like it, go for it.
if it were a very close relative it might be weird, but I think in your case it's far enough removed.

sausageandorangepickle · 08/12/2013 09:26

I'd say go for it, but perhaps encourage a different nn, so if your cousin's DD is known as Milly, you go for Amy or Mel etc

womma · 08/12/2013 09:57

It's lovely. My GM's name, it was shortened to Min which I love.

MumpiresRedCard · 08/12/2013 09:59

yes, it was the number one name for a while (might still be). You can only copy an unusual name imo. It's a cousin's child, so the children will be second cousins? is that right. I think that's ok.
I would (and have) advised against cousins with the same name though, ie, one set of grandparents with two grandchildren with the same name.

MummyPig24 · 08/12/2013 19:32

I love Amelia. I would go for it but I have a very close friend with the same name so I think that's a little weird. I would use the name if a friend had a child with the same name though.

MummyPig24 · 08/12/2013 19:33

Another Amelia I know is shortened to Mimi.

sandfrog · 08/12/2013 19:33

Yes it's fine.

Distrustinggirlnow · 08/12/2013 19:39

Yes love it! My DGM name and now my DGD name. My DGM was Minnie too, not so sure about that one with Disney and what have you!

I think it's far enough removed in your family for it not to be a problem.

Tea1Sugar · 09/12/2013 16:03

Thanks for the reassurance :-) Just needed to hear it's ok from some impartial people! Amelia it is. Love it! Now to decide between Kate, Claire, Belle or Beth for a middle name! Frankly any one syllable name bar the ubiquitous Rose or May!

I know a few Amelia's shortened to Milly/Millie too

Grumblelion · 09/12/2013 20:27

If you like it, definitely go for it, though I suppose you could have an Emilia (however I do know one and in my head it's always spelt the other way! Blush). I quite like Emmy as a nn too.

Kate & Beth go best out of your middle names I think.

I quite like recurring names in large families. An astonishing number of the women in DH's family are called Margaret, and they always know which Margaret they mean.

Amelia's a popular name because it's a really lovely name - go for it.
