Not sure I should put this in baby names, as I am not pg, but I LOVE the name Jonty. However, is it a standalone name or a nn for Jonathan? DH and I are disagreeing on it. I always thought/assumed it was a nn. No matter either way- lovely name!

nn for me - I have a friend who was known a Jonty, but it's only what his family and friends call him. He's Jonathan when he needs to be.

CogsworthAndJerry · 24/11/2013 16:55

It's a nickname to me. I had a friend years ago named John whose nickname Jonty.

HyvaPaiva · 24/11/2013 16:56

As others have said, it's just a nickname.

sleepingbeautiful · 24/11/2013 17:14

Nickname to me

squoosh · 24/11/2013 17:49

Nickname to me. I imagine he'd be best pals with Billy Bunter, posh and a bit buffoonish.

Bowlersarm · 24/11/2013 17:50

Nickname. Agree with Squooshs image. Doesn't do anything for me. I like Johnny though.

VirtuallyReal · 24/11/2013 17:54

Much much prefer Johnny.

BlueBirdy · 24/11/2013 17:58

A Famous Jonty is the cricketer Jonty Rhodes, his christian name is Jonathon but only ever known as 'Jonty'. I think a nn can be a standalone name, maybe just use 'Jonathon' on birth cert. Think it is a great name Smile

Pinkbell123 · 24/11/2013 20:35

Nn for John or Jonathan I think. I love it Grin

iklFaceOfBooe · 24/11/2013 20:36

I worked with a guy who was known as Jonty. He got called Jonty Pops. Lovely bloke.

AmberDextrous · 24/11/2013 20:36

Love Jonty!

poppydaisy · 24/11/2013 22:23

Really like Jonty! Given the recent trend for nicknames to be used on the birth certificate e.g. Alfie, Archie, Charlie, Monty, I could imagine Jonty being used by itself. Otherwise a nickname for Jonathan.

Moffit · 27/11/2013 01:04

My friends husband is called Jonty. Not as a nickname but his actual first name.

ClaraBarton · 27/11/2013 03:04

Jonty Pops, what every grown man wants to be called Wink

mathanxiety · 27/11/2013 03:40

Jonty would compete for Upper Class Twit of the Year.

nooka · 27/11/2013 03:49

I like Jonty, but only for Jonathon I don't think it makes a good standalone name at all (but I don't like nns for given names in general).

TobyLerone · 27/11/2013 03:57

I know several people called Jonty, and it's their full name.

They're all towards the upper end of the class scale, if it makes a difference. It seems to be that people more down towards the 'lower'/middle end of the class scale worry more about needing a 'long' name on the birth certificate. The truly posh don't always care!

poppydaisy · 27/11/2013 21:58

I know lots of little Alfies, Archies and Montys who are just that rather than Alfreds, Archibalds or Montgomerys.

KrabbyPatty · 27/11/2013 22:01

I love it too.

I know 2 (both children). Afaik, it is their proper name.
