Trying to decide if it deserves a place on the short list so thoughts please. I know there will be obvious connections but would that make it unusable for you?

Not keen on Arnold - sounds too 'old man' for me. Prefer Arnie but as you say it immediately makes me think of...Arnie. What else do you have on your shortlist?

WowserBowser · 11/11/2013 12:22

Don't like it, with or without the connotations

BitOutOfPractice · 11/11/2013 12:23

Tony Blackburns' dog?

I don't like it sorry

IslaValargeone · 11/11/2013 12:24

I would suggest keeping it off the shortlist tbh.

Wildwaterfalls · 11/11/2013 12:25

Oh I'm glad someone started a thread on this. DH keeps suggesting it for DS as it's a family name. I'm not that keen but might consider as a middle name. I do think of Schwarzenegger, sorry.

Onesleeptillwembley · 11/11/2013 12:27

There's a reason this hasn't risen in popularity during this dad for old man names.

Onesleeptillwembley · 11/11/2013 12:27

This fad, not dad.

Branleuse · 11/11/2013 12:29

i like it

Spaghettinetti · 11/11/2013 15:20

I think it's quite a cool name...I much prefer it to Arthur, which is proving quite popular at the mo. Nicknames of Arnie or Arn or even Arno would go down well I imagine when he's in school... It's a good solid name and isn't sappy...and it's not common either...

roweeena · 11/11/2013 17:47

Definitely like it but I imagine there will be loads of people on here who hate it - but hey Jo it would be bloody boring if we all liked the same names.

If YOU like it use it

Frontdoorstep · 11/11/2013 17:56

I think it's quite nice.

CarryOnDancing · 11/11/2013 20:14

DawnOfTheDee a lot of our list is pretty marmite anyway and I know they aren't the types of names that receive unanimous love on here! I've posted it on here before. It's as follows:

Joint list:

Robin-the only one we agree on but we both prefer at least one of our own choices. It feels a bit safe.
Vincent (and nn's)-we both like but don't love
Arnold-both like but it hasn't quite made the list yet

My List:

Laurence-I really love it but it does feel like my safe option.
Alvin-yes, despite the chipmunks!
Irvin
Ivan
Baxter- yes, despite the soup!
Alexander/Lex-not Alex or Xander nns and would be my compromise name in case family refuse to use Lex.

DH's List:

Julius/Jules
Dexter
Irwin- yes, Steve Irwin!
Darwin- I've said a definite no. I actually like the name but one side of the family are really religious.

OP, listen to your DH on this one Grin

DawnOfTheDee · 11/11/2013 20:26

Oooh I like Vincent (nn Vince or Vin)....think it's quite cool. Would be on my shortlist if i were having a boy.

Out of the others I like Alexander and Dexter (love Dexter actually). You're individual lists aren't actually massively different in terms of type of name. I'm sure you'll find something you'll both love Smile

What about Evan?

CarryOnDancing · 11/11/2013 21:02

Maybe....I won't be passing on your opinion to DH Grin

OP posts:
CarryOnDancing · 11/11/2013 21:19

Dawn, I quite like Evan but DH doesn't and there are names I like more so I'm putting my energy into campaigning for them.

I'm not sure if I've just reached a certain point with seeking opinions on names, or maybe I just see the same names that are liked over and over on mn but now disapproval seems almost as attractive to me?!

I don't really want a popular well liked name as popularity is also a way of ageing a name and placing it in a certain decade. My only concern with Arnold therefore is that it will be linked to the old man trend as mentioned above.

As long as I'm not missing any bullying potential I think I'm actually quite happy if the majority don't love it, as the majority use the same names (not a criticism!!), hence the stats.

Thanks everyone, you've been very helpful!!

Really don't like Arnold, sorry!

Vincent is a great name!

JazzAnnNonMouse · 11/11/2013 21:44

Hey Arnold, hey football head

Is all I think of- sorry !

roweeena · 12/11/2013 13:17

Arnold is definitely the best out if all of them. Really don't like robin

Mumbrage · 12/11/2013 13:18

I know an Arnaud. (toddler). I think it's ok

Mumbrage · 12/11/2013 13:19

What about Victor instead of Vincent? It's got a bit more backbone.

Nataleejah · 12/11/2013 13:28

Arnold is nice. Myself i'm thinking of Arn or Arnes
