Mainstream Muslim Names

Needing help and inspiration. Husband is Muslim, so is keen to keep to a Muslim name - but we're both agreed we want it to be mainstream or not with strong Asian connotations.

We've got a few girls names which we think we can agree on. But boys names are a nightmare - there doesn't seem to be much middle ground.

I like quite like Nail (like Nyall), and Mika. Husband hates both.

We both are okay with Ilias, Ilan and Isis. But not sure how others would view them, thoughts....?

So far we've ruled out Kameron, Daniel, Haris, Aydin and Dean. Either because friends have already used, or they don't go with our surname.

Open to other ideas!?!

Hi,

We were just the same, husband Muslim, I am not. We have an 11 day old girl, I had lots of girl names but also struggled for boy names, the ones we considered were:

Samir
Noah
Anthony
Ali

My husband is Arab so the above are Arab Muslim names (as far as I am aware!!)

There was a similar thread here last night that got deleted...

Hmm

And the grammar and punctuation is completely different, report it to MNHQ if you suspect.

Huh? Never posted last night, first post on this particular board (first visit!).

Is there something suspect about my question....?

Adam? Zakariah? Zayn? Sami?

2468Motorway · 10/11/2013 23:53

Adam and Sami are nice. Omar and Zak also cool.

Vajazzler · 10/11/2013 23:57

Amir?

PatriciaHolm · 11/11/2013 09:26

Isis would generally be viewed as a girl's name here (reference point being the Egyptian Goddess)

Amir would work, and I love Ilias.

bebopanddoowop · 11/11/2013 09:30

I'm actually not sure if it's. Muslim name (ignorant here sorry)! But i know a couple if Muslim men called Sonny and I love that name!

Spindelina · 11/11/2013 11:02

Just a quick note on Samir....

while it is an Arab muslim name, it is also an Indian Hindu name. So whether or not it is appropriate might depend on where your DH has his roots!

AnnaKissed · 11/11/2013 12:05

Muslim friends of mine have given their children prophet's names but the anglicised version. So Yakub becomes Jacob etc.

Rosencrantz · 11/11/2013 13:07

Love Ilan. My dissertation supervisors name is Ilan. Lovely man! Canadian! Hadn't realised it was Muslim!

Stat · 11/11/2013 13:57

Sorry if these have been mentioned already, these are some of the more common Muslim names given to babies in Britain.

Muhammad/Mohammed
Rayyan/Rayan
Ibrahim
Yusuf
Zakariya
Abdullah
Ahmed
Eesa/Isa
Syed
Ali
Hamza
Abdul
Hassan
Ismail

Nataleejah · 12/11/2013 20:35

Hamzah or Hamza
Also Gabriel or Jibrahil

DziezkoDisco · 12/11/2013 20:51

And ones to avoid ime (due to teasing by small children)
Abrar (a bra)
Fahd (fat)

Pathetic I know.

Nataleejah · 12/11/2013 20:55

Hadis, Hafiz, Hassan?

stenhousemuir · 13/11/2013 21:25

How about Idris? It can either be a Muslim name, or Welsh, which I think is kind of neat.

hobbjobb · 13/11/2013 22:01

I love Omar, it's pretty mainstream, I know a Spanish non Muslim called that...
Adam is also good as it crosses religious lines and is mainstream.

For girls I love Miriam, Noor and Samira.
