Girls names that are not frilly

So, we have a bit of a list for dc3 but wonder if there is anything else to consider or what you would choose! We already have a Matilda.

Possible options,

Alexandra (with Alex or possibly Sacha as nn)
Rowan
Robyn (but ds best friend is Robin and plays here regularly!)
Wren (bit out there possibly, other 2 dc names are more traditional but we both really like it)
Iris
Elsa
Esme
Hope

Middle names with family connection could be Elizabeth, Olivia, Louisa, or would consider non family names too.

This feels hard as there will definitely not be another baby to name after this one! Will do boys names separately.

We quite like Hattie with Harriet for official name but is ruled out due to 2 close friends babies. Also 2 adult friends are Nel and Rachel so would probably avoid. Our surname starts with M and has an ee sound to end which rules out Marnie. In fact Esme might be a bit of a mouthful even with es may pronunciation but we both like it.

Quite like Thea, Connie, Tess, Jaime, Alice. I wish we liked Sophie as we already have an accidental Roald Dahl theme as ds is Charlie!

Thanks everyone.

I have a Robyn, do they shorten at all? My Robyn is a Bobby, Bob, Rob, Robbie, Robson,Bobinogs all sorts girly or otherwise

Robyn4270 · 24/10/2013 15:47

Robyn has always been a great name for me. I always loved it when growing up, I was the only Robyn in the whole school so I felt original and special :)

Robyn4270 · 24/10/2013 15:51

I'd say

Robyn Olivia
or
Olivia Hope

I must say Robyn worked well for me, being the only Robyn in schools growing up made me feel one of a kind :)

Thesebootsweremadeforwalking · 24/10/2013 18:10

If you like Hattie, how about Hannah?

I tend to think of the biblical names as the least frilly, like a pp - so Ruth, Rachel, Rebecca?

jenniferturkington · 24/10/2013 21:13

I absolutely love Rowan.
Also Josephine and Connie are strong classic names.

deste · 24/10/2013 21:56

I have a Sophie and I still love it and so does she.

misslongstocking · 24/10/2013 22:06

Hannah immediately came to mind when you said non frilly in your OP.

ProfondoRosso · 24/10/2013 22:49

I love Joan and Jean, notadoctor. They make me think of Joan of Arc. On that note, you could also have Jeanne.

I know a Joanie who taught me at uni and is now a good friend. She's an amazing, creative, cool woman and I always think of her when I hear 'Joanie.'

DancingLady · 25/10/2013 20:12

Really like Tess, Joan, Frances, Romy (DD's middle name), and if I ever had another girl she'd be a Rowan... just love it. I know a male Rowan and a female one.

Are the female Iras you know non-British? Wondering, as it could be a shortened Polish name? I just know it as a male, Jewish name, v popular in the US.

mewkins · 25/10/2013 22:18

Esther

JumpingJackSprat · 25/10/2013 22:50

Claudia is my favourite girls name non frilly but still gorgeous imo

Mattissy · 25/10/2013 23:14

I know a few Ira's, all male, all Jewish.

I know two Rowan's, but male, lol

But then Robin is unisex so they could be too.

Wren is very twee IMHO, it's a cute little bird!

Love Iris, Esther, Elsa, Martha

NewbieMcNewbie · 25/10/2013 23:21

Loving Claudia myself now actually...

Mattissy · 25/10/2013 23:28

Claudia... Love!

Clara too

Bakingtins · 26/10/2013 06:56

Lois
Lydia
Esther

Wow, sorry missed further replies! I can't decide if it is good or bad that I am not keen enough on most suggested names to put them above the current shortlist. I like Hannah but definitely can't choose it! I will try dh with Tess, Romilly, Alice, Rebecca (or Rebekah maybe).

All this angst and it could be a boy!! On that shortlist is Isaac, Noah, Oscar, Kit if you are interested...
