Just that really. Expecting DS1 and thinking of Casper, but want to explore other / more Scandinavian options.

What do you think of Sven? Is Thor too odd?

Or how about Gustav?

Henrik, I love it!

Wildwaterfalls · 20/10/2013 20:48

Haha Lentil will put it on the list for you.

Love Henrik but can't have it for family reasons!

Also Timion

I think thats a beautiful name.

LentilAsAnything · 20/10/2013 22:17

:)

Rhubarbgarden · 20/10/2013 22:18

I love Gustav. But I'm biased because I have a Gus and we sometimes lengthen it to Gustav despite deliberately giving him a name that couldn't be shortened as I supposedly hate nicknames

PipkinsPal · 20/10/2013 22:27

Morten (Harkett) lovely arms.

Miopiccolotopolino · 20/10/2013 22:50

Not Gustav, sorry. It's very old fashioned but not in a good way iyswim.

I like:

Leif
Magnus
Casper
Henrik
Johan
Kent
Lennart
Ruben

I actually like Sven.

Quick question for bundaberg with DS Linus - do you pronounce it Lee-nus or Lye-nus?

OP posts:
Wildwaterfalls · 21/10/2013 09:06

Rhubarb I love Gus! And possibly Gussie when he's little, although that is a bit PG Wodehouse...

RandomCitizen · 21/10/2013 09:16

I have a Gustav.

I call him goose. He was born in the snow last year, so he was my little snow goose Smile

I don't like the shortening to Gus as so many people have suggested to me in real life - but then I say it more like 'Goostaf' you know, like the goos bit rhymes with woof, so Gus would sound strange.

Woman at the drs checking his appointment pronounced it gus, as in bus, - tav as in chav the other day.!

RandomCitizen · 21/10/2013 09:18

Btw if your family is connected to this sort of provenance then you can have anything and it won't be odd.

If you've no connection then yes, Thor might sound a bit odd!

We have Russian/German family so hopefully can get away with it Smile

bundaberg · 21/10/2013 09:38

We pronounce it lie-nus (like in snoopy) but I know that isn't the correct Scandinavian pronunciation!

I think it should be linn-us (short I rather than e sound)

Rhubarbgarden · 21/10/2013 10:34

We do also call him Gussy, I must admit. Probably more than Gustav. Will probably drop it as he gets older - can't imagine a teenage boy called Gussy!

Wildwaterfalls · 21/10/2013 10:54

We are a Swedish / Dutch family (outs self) and most of these names work in all languages, although pronunciation is an issue.

Linus would be Leenus, Linnus or Lienus depending on the language. And I don't even want to try and spell how you pronounce Gustav (Guus) in Dutch but it involves lots of gurgling!

OP posts:
BurberryQ · 21/10/2013 10:56

how about Axel?

RandomCitizen · 21/10/2013 10:57

LOL, is it sort of 'Hjustaf'?

Wildwaterfalls · 21/10/2013 11:00

Goose is a very cute nickname! I love it!

Quite like Axel - will put on list.

We are Anglo-Dutch. So when we are over in Holland, my Gus gets the, er, sneeze pronunciation. I don't think you can avoid differences in pronunciation. Both my kids cope fine with their names being pronounced differently by different family members. After all, there are even differences within the UK - my Yorkshire family's good solid 'Gus' is very different from the almost 'Gas' he gets down here in the south east.

Wildwaterfalls · 21/10/2013 11:02

Oh and my attempt at the Dutch pronunciation:

Ggghhhuuustaaaaf

Haha. So gurgling followed by long vowels.

Yes Rhubarb I think you're right and pronunciation differences are unavoidable. DD's name is Dutch and although the Swedish and English broadly get it right they sometimes go a bit off-piste and it doesn't really bother me (or her, but then she's 14 months!)

roguepixie · 21/10/2013 11:24

Thys? Think it is Dutch in origin but appears as a Scaninavian name too.

bsc · 21/10/2013 11:31

merrylegs I think we were separated at birth!
Magnus and Espen my absolute favourite boys names!

I like MT too! [Grin]
