Olivier for a boy? Ollie for a nn?
I've had mixed reactions so thought I'd ask mn what they thought!

Pronounced how? French? I would hesistate to guess. If French, why? Do you have connections there?

It will be mistaken for Oliver, which is incredibly popular, esp if shortened to Ollie which is even popularererer. Would that annoy you?

I'm a no, I think.

extracrunchy · 18/10/2013 19:29

It's nice if you're French. Like Xavier. Otherwise it's maybe a tiny bit pretentious... Soz!

BunnyLebowski · 18/10/2013 19:30

Olivier as in Laurence?

If so, very twattish. Unless you're French?

If not, I really dislike Oliver as well.

And Ollie - it's just such an unpleasant sound.

Thants · 18/10/2013 19:33

I like it. It will get pronounced wrong all the time but that doesn't matter.

CbeebiesIsMyLife · 18/10/2013 19:44

I like Ollie, it doesn't matter that it's popular I don't really mind. (Dd's both have ie names as nn too)

I'm not French but dh lived in France for a few years and dd2 has a Greek name dd1 has an English name so thought a French name might be nice.

I read that as Oliver, so I think others will too.

CbeebiesIsMyLife · 18/10/2013 19:49

I also wondered about the spelling Oliveà as I thought people might read it as Oliver. But I'm not sure dh will go for it.

Please not Olivea - what the actual? Is that pretending to be Portuguese or something?

It looks like a weird spelling of Olivia, which is a girl's name. Please please no.

Tikkamasala · 18/10/2013 20:04

Don't spell Olivier as oliveà, they are not even pronounced the same Confused

CbeebiesIsMyLife · 18/10/2013 20:05

Dh just pointed out why that wouldn't work, and I thought I had a grasp of languages!!

Ooops. I have to say, I read that as Oliver and didn't realise it wasn't till I read the other posts. I really like Oliver. Olivier is fine and Ollie nice but it probably will get mispronounced.

RoadToTuapeka · 18/10/2013 20:08

Oliver is very popular where I live, as is Olivia for girls. Before I met any I thought I liked Oliver, but inexplicably when I had a colleague named Oliver I really disliked the name. Lovely colleague I just hated the sound of the name! So it would be a no from me.

RoadToTuapeka · 18/10/2013 20:09

Sorry just re-read that you said Olivier. Don't like that either sorry.
