Is Robert dated or classic?

I don't think I know a small Robert. Is it a Steven/Kevin name, or a John/Andrew name?

A serious contender for DS3 due very soon, to be introduced as Robin.

Is Robin worse/better?

Robin seems more like a girl's name to me. Robert. Hmm. I rather think it could grow on me. I think it's probably a bit dated and not quite classic. Has a slightly Scottish feel to me. More like Andrew than the other names you suggested. John is properly classic.

TheNunsOfGavarone · 14/10/2013 18:50

Classic.

Housesellerihope · 14/10/2013 18:53

Classic. Love it.

Bugsylugs · 14/10/2013 18:53

Robin is a boys name for me.
I know a small Robert

Hulababy · 14/10/2013 18:58

I prefer to Robert to Robin.
Although I don't know any small Roberts at the moment I don't think it sounds too dated tbh. I can imagine children and adults alike with the name and t seems to work fine for both imo.

I am not keen on the name Robin personally. I would say Robin is a boy, Robyn is a girl. Have the latter in our new Reception class.

Mim78 · 14/10/2013 19:05

I like Robert. I think it is classic. I don't actually know a small Robert but I don't think it means not classic. Know a few adult Roberts though (of varying ages) and all seem to like being called it.

I'd put it in the "can't go wrong" category with names like John/Andrew/Edward etc, though not sure that Steven belongs with Kevin!

I don't really like the name Robin.

Not sure I would say it isn't a boys name, as I'm sure it started as one. Might it have started as nickname for Robert anyway?

fiverabbits · 14/10/2013 19:05

My DH who is 62 has Robert as a second name and I have a nephew who is 35 called Robert, it may be old fashioned but then George is going to come back in fashion sometimes it is nice to hear a name that is not the same as all the other babies.

boardingschoolbaby · 14/10/2013 19:05

I like Robert- very classic.
Robin is a crappy sidekick, or a sort of wimpy, plays the violin very badly type child in my mind.
I have no idea where this stems from- I do not know any violin challenged Robin's but there you go. Absolutely not based on any scientific evidence. Grin

nooka · 14/10/2013 19:11

Of course Robert is a classic name! It's simply not particularly in fashion at the moment I suspect because it's more of a 'dad' name than a 'grandad' name on the generational name curve.

Great name, lots of history and lots of choice of nn (including Robin),

ClaraOswald · 14/10/2013 19:14

Robert/Stephen/Michael/David/Andrew are all in the same sort of bracket for me.

Classic, not overused, not offensive

monkeyfacegrace · 14/10/2013 19:16

I have a robert. Robbie mostly, sometimes rob. He suits it perfectly.

Ham69 · 14/10/2013 19:17

I feel it is a tad dated at the moment but I think it's because it's a name I think of as my generation. I'd put it with Peter and Michael.

Wallison · 14/10/2013 19:19

I think it's a bit 70s to be honest. Robin, on the other hand, is great. I know two Robins, both a bit mad and boho and absolutely top blokes.

Rhubarbgarden · 14/10/2013 19:23

Classic. Bob is a great nickname for a little one.

OVOntToSuckYourBlood · 14/10/2013 19:25

Classic.

I have a Robert.

And Rob is a cool nickname IMO.

ZippityDoodahday · 14/10/2013 19:26

Dated.

JimbosJetSet · 14/10/2013 19:26

Great name, was my first choice until vetoed by DH Hmm
Word of caution though - we ended up going for a name that also ends in a 't,' and it drives me nuts every time someone pronounces the name without the 't' (and I say that as someone who isn't very good at sounding the 't' at the ends of words myself!)
Just telling you that as it hasn't occurred to me until after DS was born and we announced his name!

DreamlessSleep · 14/10/2013 19:26

Classic. Love it.

SunnyL · 14/10/2013 19:27

My nephew is Robert and has just turned 10. He's never Bob, Rob, Rabbie or Boab (we're Scottish). It's a lovely strong name and surprisingly uncommon nowadays.

LineRunner · 14/10/2013 19:28

Robert is terrific.

AryaofhouseSnark · 14/10/2013 19:31

I prefer Robin personally, but I think Robert is a classic rather than dated.

Yes I like Rob too, but I am a got fan.
There might even be a Robert revival in honour of the king in the north.

MoominMammasHandbag · 14/10/2013 19:32

Robert was on my list. Strong, classic, not too try hard. Roberta (Bobby) was my girl name.

mummybare · 14/10/2013 19:33

I know a baby Robert. Can also be Bobby or Bertie, both of which I quite like.

We didn't even consider it as it's DH's name but I do like it for a little one.
