Is Robert dated or classic?

I don't think I know a small Robert. Is it a Steven/Kevin name, or a John/Andrew name?

A serious contender for DS3 due very soon, to be introduced as Robin.

Is Robin worse/better?

I know a little Robert whose mum calls him Bertie. I like it

rosy71 · 14/10/2013 19:34

Ds2 is Robert. He's 5. We call him Robbie though & spent quite a while deliberating whether to put Robbie or Robert on his birth certificate. We decided on Robert because Robbie sounds like a little boy's name whilst Robert is more grown up.

I think Rob sounds really cool too as a short form.

FamiliesShareGerms · 14/10/2013 19:35

Robert is a classic name. Rob, Robbie, Bertie are good modern NN (I know a few little boys known by those)

HesterShaw · 14/10/2013 19:36

I love Robert. Robert was my first love....

A fine strong name :)

ToniBasil · 14/10/2013 19:37

I'm not a fan TBH but then I like unusual names. DC are Cooper & Wren. But I don't really care what other people think of our choices, and I think you shouldn't too. Go with what you love I say.

Weegiemum · 14/10/2013 19:37

I know quite a few Roberts, nn Robbie, and a very cool teen nn Rob. Maybe more common in Scotland. It's my Dad's name but we used his middle name for ds middle name. I like it.

NigellasGuest · 14/10/2013 19:39

Robert is great for a boy! I prefer Robin for a girl though.

dollybird · 14/10/2013 19:45

little boy next door, about 3 is called Robert, very cute. Also was my uncle's name and is my DB's middle name. I like it.

Sunnysummer · 14/10/2013 20:03

Robert is definitely classic. Strong and known but not common among kids these days.

Robin is much less appealing to me, cute for a boy but not so much for a man.

Classic

unknownrebelbang · 14/10/2013 22:59

Classic, of course!

MERLYPUSS · 15/10/2013 11:35

Neither. It an ok name.

stripeytiger · 15/10/2013 11:44

Good solid name.

SnakeyMcBadass · 15/10/2013 11:50

Perfectly fine, solid name.

ImAFrequentNameChanger · 15/10/2013 13:34

Robert is much better than Robin. DB is Robert and it is dated, like Ian.

rosyryan · 15/10/2013 13:45

Classic. Don't like Robin at all.

honeybeeridiculous · 15/10/2013 14:43

my nephew is Robert, Bobby when younger, now, a teenager, Rob, lovely strong name, a classic!

Strix · 15/10/2013 14:50

Classic. Fab name.

ProfondoRosso · 15/10/2013 14:53

Robert is lovely - it's dignified and I don't see it dating.

HorryIsUpduffed · 15/10/2013 15:44

Thanks everyone.

Weirdly, your approval has put me off it Blush but I'm blaming pgy hormones for the capriciousness.

Classic.

I know four aged between 5 and 16. Mostly known as Robbie, all of them.

Bowlersarm · 15/10/2013 15:50

OP-are you looking for names we don't like then??

May I suggest Hector-always gets negative feedback on MN.

Or Alfie/Charlie/Archie as they end in 'ie' and are cutesy Shock. Lots of negativity about those.

(Only joking...)

HorryIsUpduffed · 15/10/2013 16:12

No, Grin I came on wanting reassurance that it's a great name, but some weird perversity was annoyed by the approval.

I think if you had all said "ugh so 70s/80s" I'd have started mentally defending it and felt more confident in the choice. Does that make any sense?

I think I can see what you mean, OP - do you mean that you would feel more attached to the name and that it belonged to you more fully if it was you and the name against the world?
