Halloween ShockPoppyAmex

Temperance sounds like an African American middle-aged woman from the deep South in the US, who spends most of her time in a Baptist Church singing in the choir.

Why would that be a bad thing to be?

"Why would that be a bad thing to be?"

Erm...

I didn't say it was a bad thing, I said it was the image it evoked for me.

I'm Latino and get why people say that Carmen sounds like a Spanish/South American person. Or that Lola is naff unless you're of Latin descent.

Tiny Temper hmmmm?

Calling her temperance might be tempting fate. She might rebel and become a raging alco.

Poor child - honestly it would be dreadful.

I don't like virtue names. So it's a nay from me sorry

Report
Bakingtins · 16/10/2013 19:42

Nope.

Grace is fine.

Constance, Faith, Hope, Verity, Felicity? All ok but not two virtue names together, definite overkill.

Taryn, Natasha, Talia?

ah curlew, a like mind Smile I have a whole dialogue running in my head with this:
"Cadence! Your behaviour has been very ii-V this morning, I don't like it when you V-vi me. I expect you to be V-I, with a feminine ending. And your grandma says IV-I to that."
Sorry to any non-musicians, but seriously... Cadence?? Just LOL.

I really like it

Like Grace a lot.

Not Temperance though - it just sounds a bit clunky and sort of no-fun, religious vibe.

Love! Love!.

I was putting forward Temperance for one of our Dcs, but DH pointed out quite rightly that given our predilections, people would PThemselvesL

BloodiedGhouloshes · 19/10/2013 13:14

I also read a great book while pg with DC 1 where the main character was called Deliverance Dane.

Loved that too.

All my Dcs are called pretty dull names, it has to be said.

Temperance is a pretty name. I agree that it sounds very 'Deep South' African-American. I used to live in the USA and knew some lovely ladies with amazing names including a Hycinth Bonaprte Grin
I put the *'s in to make it ungoogle'able
Tem would be ok as a nickname.
If I were to choose Temperance I would steer clear of Grace as a middle name as it sounds a bit too religious and pretentious in combination with Temperance. Something short and plain would be nice. Something like Temperance Anne

I definitely like Temperance though

Report
JoinYourPlayfellows · 19/10/2013 13:17

Or Temp?

Report
lljkk · 19/10/2013 14:48

Tempe is the nn, it's not so uncommon state-side. Alright to my ears.

But implies OP has an agenda about temperance, iyswim, alcohol to be specific.
