Sigrid?

DP and I both love the name Sigrid for a girl. Recently I was browsing an American name website where you can read people's opinions on names and apparently Sigrid sounds like cigarette? I don't get that at all, neither does DP. It is See-grid, not Sig-rid, so how does it sound like cigarette? What do you think? And also, which are your favourite Norse names (either gender)?

Similar to Sigrid, how about Sigrun? Also Gudrun.

Sigrun is kind of cool, but isn't that worse for the cigarette problem? Like: I soo can't wait, time for a cig-run! Or am I just being paranoid now?

Gudrun is one of my guilty pleasure names, but it's one of those old people's names children make fun of where I am from.

It's a very strong name that not everyone likes, but as long as it doesn't sound like something bad we don't have a problem with that.

It's quite harsh sounding though. Where's it from? I love the idea of Siggy/ziggy for a nickname though. Very cute. On reflection, maybe not Siggy (ciggy). I like Ziggy though.

nicename, it's an old norse name meaning beautiful victory. Definitely not too out there for us as DC will be half Swedish. Ziggy is a cool nickname, especially since DP is a Bowie fan

Sigrid is lovely. And tbh, to talk about it sounding like cigarette is like choosing not to name you child Alice because it sounds a bit like anus - everything sounds a bit like something!!

Aldis is cool, but DP thinks all -is names are old people's names.
Sibbe sounds like it's short for something.
Signy would be difficult to pronounce in English. Or am I wrong?

Edda - name of the Icelandic saga.
Eira - god of healing (Eir) and means snow in Welsh.
Hedda - from Hedwig, which is cool, but too Harry Potter-y.

Solveig is nice, but I have met too many old ones to imagine it on a baby. Gudrun makes all Swedes think of a feminist politician. Awesome according to me, but aweful according to others, so I'm not too sure.

When I was a kid we had a German aupair called sigrid. We called here sigi, pronounced ciggy, but I've never associated the name with cigs until this thread!

I like it. I have two cousins with similar nns, Ziggy/Zig and Siggy and despite being a smoker I had never made the ciggy connection until about 20 seconds ago.

Signy is nice, would that be Sig-ne or See-gny based on your pronunciation of Sigrid? Eira is lovely.

I love Astrid which I think is similar but no idea if it is actually Norse of just sounds it to me
