Tell playgroup Mum to sod off. I bet you any money her kids names have a non British origin.

squoosh · 11/10/2013 11:55

I quite like Laverne, I imagine a curvy nightclub singer from the 1960's with an excellent beehive and lots of flicky eyeliner.

Maud2011 · 11/10/2013 14:03

What????? Playgroup mum's logic makes the mind boggle!

That said I think the French pronunciation is prettier.

Coupon · 11/10/2013 15:25

Use whatever name you like, it's certainly not up to some random person at playgroup to decide for you.

scaevola · 11/10/2013 15:27

I think that, since the series 'Laverne and Shirley' the name has been mainstream in anglophone countries too.

Rosencrantz · 11/10/2013 17:07

I can't help but think of Scrubs.

niffernaffer · 11/10/2013 19:36

I also thought of Laverne and Shirley. And Lauren Laverne. Like it!

I'd like to know what the playgroup mum thinks are suitably British and non-posh names.... I'm wondering whether Baldrick would pass muster Grin

Bowlersarm · 11/10/2013 20:56

Sorry OP but I definitely don't think you need to be posh to use the name Laverne.

Do you mind it shortened to 'Lav'?

LeMousquetaireAnonyme · 11/10/2013 20:57

I am french, I would never use Laverne (it is not a french name, it is definitely american of french origin may be).
So be free to use it! If you like it doesn't matter what she think I don't think it is particularly posh either

kelly21 · 11/10/2013 21:12

no i didnt think it was posh :) it did cross my mind about people calling her lav but then that would only be when shes in highschool and then she would have control over her name and bullying wise am not worried about kids will find anything to pick on someone for x
