Wilfred?

What's the consensus on Wilfred? Is it a bit Shoreditch try-hard? Could nickname be Will as well as Wilf?

Had always liked William, but DD is Katy, and think that Katy and William is a bit too Royal family-ish now. Also have had to ditch George for the same reason.

Other ideas, along with their reasons for veto are:

Jonathan - vetoed as Tomas will be the middle name, and John Tomas is slang for a penis. Thanks DH Lawrence for messing that one up for us...

Samuel - vetoed as when couple with Tomas and our surname the initials will be STD.

Frederick and Edward - Freddie/Eddie sound a bit duh-duh-duh-duh (think machine gunfire), when said with our surname.

Any other suggestions?

If baby is a girl, she will be Hannah Lucia (Lucia to be pronounced with a soft 'c', as that is Swedish), not sure if that helps give an idea as to our tastes - we definitely err on the side of classic / traditional (boring?).

All opinions and ideas gratefully received!

I like it, but if you're trying to avoid a royal vibe it is still too close. You'd still have a Kate and Will!

Ha puppyfat I do know what you mean, and I think I was clutching at straws when I thought of Wilf as an alternative to William!

Any other suggestions?! I don't want a trendy old man name, but I also don't want to land a son with dubious initials etc, and I am struggling!

I do like Oliver but am worried by its ongoing popularity and the thought he would be one of many at school.

I know it is tricky. I think you can't go wrong with bible names there's loads of choice more solid Ones in the New Matthew Mark etc.Or you could go with a theme mine all have Welsh names. Good luck choosing.

I think Wilfred is great. Could be Will, Wilf or Fred.

I quite the idea of Gilbert, with a nickname of Gil, but don't think we could carry it off!

I do like Daniel, but DH needs to be convinced that alliteration with our surname isn't a problem.

We also like James, but there's a celeb called James (Jimmy) and our surname which puts us off. Admittedly not a high profile celeb, or someone you'd expect to be on a front page, but still makes us wary.

Hmmm. I am just waiting for a 'thunderbolt' moment with boys names and it isn't forthcoming so far...

I used to know a Wilfried (Austrian father, I think), who was known as Wil (stil pronounced like 'will').

I looooooooooooooooove Wilfred!! It didn't suit DS3 or we would have used it. Still makes me a bit sad that we didn't.

Alot of people who like William also like Alexander - does that suit you at all?

I'm not a big fan of James, but no particular reason!

Dh has just fully vetoed Daniel as well as Wilfred (which to be honest I don't think I was convinced by).

Stupid question, but what's the full/proper name which gives Gus as a nickname?

Winterton I have an irrational aversion to Alexander. Feel it is a bit grand when full length, and then I either think of the Alex from the game Guess Who (childish, much?), or a complete bell-end that I used to work with, so that one's out I'm afraid.

How about Henry, Quentin, Sebastian or Augustus (if you're after Gus as nickname)

I love Wilfred, but DS1 is Gilbert and often called Gil. I'm keeping it on my list for DS4, although it will probably get vetoed by DH.

I would assume Angus was full name for Gus. Like it.

Hmm, I like Angus. Dh is half Scottish so it is quite appropriate (I'm right thinking it's a Scottish name aren't I?).

Will see what dh thinks.

I taught a Wilf, quite liked the name but just wait until you get to Oxford Reading Tree books.

My OH really wanted Wilfred and although I liked it wasn't convinced so we used it as our Ds2 middle name.

Um similar names you might like,

Matthew
Henry
Benjamin
Joseph
Solomon
Benedict

It is so tricky and so personal, whatever you pick someone will disagree so go with what you love. Ds1's name was picked out for ages, Ds2 just came to us when we saw him.

They would still be Katy & Will whether you used Wilfred or William! I would go with William, not keen on Wilfred at all, sorry!

Wilfred has been ditched, as has Angus as it sounds weird with Tomas as a middle name. We know too many Bens / Benjamins, and ditto Matthews / Matts, so those have also been vetoed. Joseph could be a contender but it is FIL's name.

So the new shortlist, in no particular order, is:

Edward Tomas (maybe Eddie D[surname] doesn't sound like machine gunfire after all)

Samuel Tomas George (and we get over the STD thing, if we add a 2nd middle name)

Oliver Tomas (and we get over the fact that Oliver is the 2nd most popular boys' name)

Jonathan Tomas (and we get over John Tomas being slang for a willy)

Luke Tomas

Henry Tomas

Any thoughts / preferences? I think I have looked at every single boy name in the UK today and these are the ones I keep returning to.
