My babies surname is going to be Romais (pronounced Ruh-MAZE). Me and DP are not married but I'm comfortable with the baby having is surname as mine is rather plain (Jones). We're expecting a girl in November and I am struggling a bit with finding a name that goes. My list so far includes

Maria
Sophia
Elizabeth
Amy

Don't want anything complicated to spell as the surname is enough. Also don't want any R names as too samey. Did like Daisy but was vetoed for being rhymey.

My top name is Cara Mia Romais but DP doesn't like it. He wants Judy. I do feel like I should get to pick the first name as he has the surname or is that selfish?

Lol. Judy started off as a joke because I am a huge Judy Garland fan. And now it's stuck and he likes it. Maybe I should just wait and see what she looks like. Does anyone know how long you get after the baby is born to officially register a name?

I believe it's 6 weeks!
Cara is a lovely name!
How about Francesca?

curlew · 28/09/2013 13:30

Judith?

And hyphenate. You will regret it later if you don't.

curlew · 28/09/2013 13:30

Or Dorothy?

I think names with R in them would result in too many Rs running into each other.

Judy is nice - has a sort of retro feel to it imo, but I would use Judith on the BC -- however, Judith is a tough one for a lot of surnames. It doesn't really flow well unless the surname begins with a vowel.

I would take Curlew's advice and use your surname as either a middle name or to form a hyphenated surname. It will make your lives immensely simpler. Nothing wrong with Jones Romais or Jones-Romais.

Of your choices I like Sophia, and Sophie would be nice too. Elizabeth is lovely too, and NNs for Elizabeth would be nice with the surname (or surnames).

I don't think your DP can insist on one name and one name only. He needs to provide a good faith list of names he could like just as you have.

Francesca is lovely - Judy Garland's real name was Frances Gumm iirc.

Thanks all. Some interesting combos to think about. Never realised how many lovely names there are in the world until I had to pick one.
