I love it.

It's pretty without being saccharine and unusual without being gimmicky.

Great for both a child and an adult and lots of nn potential.

DancingLady · 17/09/2013 21:16

Love it. Makes me think of Lillian Gish, silent film star, and sounds very 1910s-1920s. Really pretty!

Middle names... hard to know without surname.

Mary
Emma
Esme (maybe a bit too mimsy)
Joan...

Not keen sorry & I like granny chic names. It just sounds ugly to me. I also don't like Lil as a nickname.

I much prefer Lily or if too popular Lilith, or Lila?

HRHwheezing · 17/09/2013 21:21

I love it, my great aunt was called Florence Lillian

DianaTrent · 17/09/2013 21:23

My DGM who was the kindest, loveliest person, with a quick sense of humour, fiery red hair and a way with words which could make anyone who crossed her decide they had better never do that again although she remained icily polite throughout. She sang opera in her youth and everyone who knew her adored her.

Thurlow · 17/09/2013 21:25

Oooh, I haven't heard this names in ages but I really like it. I'd say a one-syllable middle name, but maybe something a little more modern/now like Grace, Eve, Hope.

CruCru · 17/09/2013 21:40

I like it. Will it bug you if people shorten it to Lily?

NadiaWadia · 17/09/2013 21:56

I quite like it. I am sure it will soon lose any 'old lady' association. Can see why you wouldn't choose Lily, as it is sooo popular now. Alternative could be Lilliana? Or Lilith sounds lovely, but you'd have to be brave to choose that (female demon I think). I second Lillian Mary. Or Lillian Katherine?

weaselwomble · 17/09/2013 22:24

Haha HRH my mum is Lillian Florence
I love it OP

Arudonto · 18/09/2013 00:51

My niece is Lilian (never lily, ground rules were set from day one) and although I wasn't keen on it initially I love the name now!its suits her down to the ground and although there are loads of lily's her age shes the only lilian around.

Classic older names like
May
Rose
Florence
Katherine
all go well with it

MummyBeerest · 18/09/2013 00:56

Love it, but it probably will be shortened to Lily. Are you ok with that?

NomDeClavier · 18/09/2013 09:54

I love Lillian. It's a beautiful, grown up yet sweet for a little girl name and if you don't like Lily as nickname you can choose something else from the start.

BlackholesAndRevelations · 18/09/2013 10:39

everlong- I LOVE all of the names you just mentioned! Grin

Not a lover of Lillian though, although I do know a 2 year old one who is mainly known as lil.

Mumblyboo · 18/09/2013 11:06

I quite liked Lilla as a shortening but don't mind lily anyway.... I'm not keen on lily used as the first part of a double name like lilyrose or lilysue but as a shortening for Lillian I don't mind it at all.... My nan was Lillian daisy which I think is lovely. X

I love Lillian Daisy.

Lillie is sweet too, I know a lovely Lillian, Lillie for short. People just seem to know it isn't Lily, not a problem.

EverythingIsSoThrowback · 18/09/2013 18:45

It's my DD1's name but spelled Lilian, so that's what it makes me think of. She's called Lili, Lil, and Lils. Her middle name is Hannah.

LillianGish · 18/09/2013 18:47

Utterly gorgeous Grin

Oubliette0292 · 18/09/2013 18:55

My DS has a Lillian in his class (year 3) - her middle name is Alexandra (she's always called Lillian - never Lily).
