Muslim boys names help needed

101twinkles · 10/09/2013 17:40

I am due in Jan with a boy. Both my husband and I are Muslims and want to give our son a modern Muslim name.
My nephews are called Adam, Noah and Zacharia so those are out.
Am thinking Samuel, Joshua, Danial or Kamran?
Any more suggestions would be really welcome as DH and I cannot agree at all.
I figure the more ideas the better. Please help?? It's driving me insane!!! X

My best friend has a son called Omar which is really nice. It sounded a bit grown up when she named him but now it really suits him.

mrsvandertramp · 10/09/2013 18:04

Not modern Muslim names, but these are some names of Muslim pupils I have taught: Ibrahim, Esa, Ahmed, Abdullah, Tamim, Sami, Hadi, Abdullah, Dawood, Jameel, Ali.

Thanks everyone. These are really nice names. Will add to my list of possibilities. We are waiting to meet him before finally deciding. Thanks xx

I really like Ashwin. I think it's a Muslim name.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 10/09/2013 21:19

My friend has a Khalid. Not sure how "modern" that is but I love it

KoalaFace · 10/09/2013 21:21

Not sure about modern but Musa is the Muslim version of Moses. I like it.

HavantGuard · 11/09/2013 00:02

Oops. It's not.

MyThumbsHaveGoneWeird · 11/09/2013 08:01

If you want something that is not the classic Arabic sounding names you could go Persian?
e.g.
Jehangir
Alamgir
Dara
Barbar

Or how about
Idris
Khurram

smithwillsam · 11/09/2013 08:15

I didn't know Joshua, Samuel, Noah etc were also Muslim names. My ds has a good friend called Harris which is lovely.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 11/09/2013 09:26

Oh yes - Darius is also nice. Think that is Persian

Just marking my place. Not sure whether we are having a not or girl yet but want a name that will work both here in the UK and in Egypt. Girls names we have a few options, boys names are proving more difficult.

burberryqueen · 13/09/2013 15:14

Sami works well in both cultures....?

burberryqueen · 13/09/2013 15:15

or Jamal?

Vijac · 13/09/2013 15:17

Aman

nicename · 13/09/2013 15:30

Sami works, as does Zac and Bobak. Then you have Darius, Caspian, Cyrus - these are family names for me.

I have Persian relies and they have mosly always gone for lovely traditional ones. Most of the latest generation are US born so I guess the main thing is that the names work internationally. Even the oldest generation went for Persian over muslim names (and there are muslim scholars and theologians in the family waaay back).

I'm not a great fan of overtly religious names (there's a Jesus, Mary and Mohammed at the nursery).

Yasmin/Jasmin is pretty for a girl. So is Sara/Zara. We have a Fathima - she is called 'fatty' or 'farti' in Iran as a pet name. I keep telling them... Negar didn't go down too well in the US either (yes, it can sound like another n-word).

Where are you from/living, OP?

sleepyMe12 · 14/09/2013 21:50

I know a Kamraan and Danyal both lovely names and work in both cultures.

101twinkles · 01/10/2013 21:33

Hi everyone. Even more great suggestions. Our list is getting longer and longer. Instead of shorter. Ha ha. Am also liking Gabriel and Mikaeel as Muslim names. Xx
Bakingnovice Joshua and Samuel are mentioned in Islamic scriptures. Traditionally not associated with Muslims. They are suitable. Depends on what you like I guess.
