Ive decided recently that I love the name Yvonne for a girl. In my head it sounds rounded, pretty, professional, feisty. However I feel myself talking about it defensively ready to justify it to people I suggest it too as most dont like it. of course the name I choose with be my own decision but if I feel like I have to defend it and explain how lovely it is to EVERYONE is it right???

Is it a very Irish name? Are you at all Celtic? Of course you should chose and not let others dissuade you but bearing in mind that your daughter will have to live with the name. I quite like it myself, it's unusual but a "proper" name and easy to spell.

If you like it, go for it.

But for me it's a bit 1980's.

I think it's a perfectly decent name - not made up, not too unusual, not too common / popular.

I know of 2 - one is 35, one is 50ish.

I don't love it but that doesn't mean diddly squat, don't feel you need to justify it to anyone.

You'll be way ahead of the pack when it whooshes back into vogue in 20 years time.

I know quite a few Yvonnes, they are all over thirty. Its not a name I'd envy but if you love it, go for it!

TBH I'd also tell anybody who asks if you have a shortlist etc that you don't. People will hopefully be less inclined to say they dislike it when you announce it as your baby's actual name.

I taught a little girl called Yvonne who'll now be about 13. Her parents pronounced her name "why-vone-ee" when I met them at parents evening.....

If you like it go for it! Yvonne often gets shortened to Yvie though which is something to consider as there are lots of little Evie's about at the moment x

It's a bit of an out of generation name which is why you may have had some non positive reactions. Generally popular names are taken from at least the next generation back (so old lady names rather than middle aged lady ones if you see what I mean). If you really like it and you don't want to hear negative feedback then stop telling people about it until your dd is born. I'd say if you feel a sense of passionate defense for a name it's probably a name you love :)

I know a lovely Yvonne (age about 50) so I like it as has a nice association. Going with the 'Yv's, how about Yvette, I like that too and only know two, both about 40 years old.
