This is my all time favourite girls name, and I just wondered what people thought of it? My boyfriend thinks it sounds masculine Sad I heartily disagree.

I used to nanny for a Lilia and thought that was a lovely name. I have to say i do think adding the 's' makes it slightly masculine.

RubyLovesShopping · 03/09/2013 15:06

Yes sounds like a boys name.

Beeyump · 03/09/2013 15:10

Oh no, this is awful! Why do you think it sounds like a boys name? Not being sarky, a very genuine question.

I think it's a lovely feminine name and I'm so surprised that anyone thinks it sounds masculine.

Beeyump · 03/09/2013 15:23

I think I love you! I was starting to feel a bit mad.

Can't see anything masculine in Lilias at all. Hmm Lots of girls' names end in s.

Try starting another thread saying you're thinking of naming a boy Lilias. I bet the responses there will reassure you Grin

I know a Lilias but most of the time it is abbreviated to 'Lil' which I'm not so keen on.

squoosh · 03/09/2013 15:39

Never in a million years would 'masculine' be a word I'd use to describe the name Lilias.

Beeyump · 03/09/2013 15:43

Grin squoosh

I like the fact that it's a Scottish name...oh, I just love it. So when people don't 'get' it I feel ridiculously hurt. Interesting that you know one in real life, thereinmadnesslies

My husbands Grandmother is called Lilias and he has already 'chosen' it for a dd Luckily I think it's a beautiful girls name. I never knew it was Scottish (DH is African). People worry too much about names if you love it that's all that matters ;-)

RubyLovesShopping · 03/09/2013 15:56

Beeyump I think it just sounds like tobias and other similar boys names but if you love it then use it!

Beeyump · 03/09/2013 16:03

It's the Scottish form of Lillian, nursingdreams

I think that's what I don't get - it's starts off sounding feminine, 'Lili', so how can it then be like Toby/Tobias? You're right though, if I love it then I need to develop a thicker skin about it.

It's an unusual name so you can't allow yourself to be peeved on behalf of the name if not everyone loves it, people here give their opinions very freely! Grin

kelda · 03/09/2013 16:08

I know a boy called Ilias, so yes to me, it does sound masculine.

4paws · 03/09/2013 16:15

As in Lilly-Ass? Have you gone completely mad? Confused

No male in the world is going to thank you for that name. Kids in school will have a field day!

PixelAteMyFace · 03/09/2013 16:15

I think it's lovely - uncommon but not unknown, and most definitely not masculine.

squoosh · 03/09/2013 16:16

Ummmmm, 4paws...............

Beeyump · 03/09/2013 16:16

Mumsnet life lesson learned today squoosh
I appreciate all the opinions!

Ah I see it's a girls name.

Again. Repeat. Lilly-Ass?

Beeyump · 03/09/2013 16:17

Haha, posted too soon - I don't really appreciate that 4paws

Beeyump · 03/09/2013 16:22

You don't say 'Lilly. Ass.' It's...well, it sounds like LIH-lee-uss

Don't appreciate what exactly?

I don't know if that is how you pronounce the name but if it is then I think it's unkind. Bound to be teased.

4paws · 03/09/2013 16:24

x-post. Well, that's a relief! Smile

YoungBritishPissArtist · 03/09/2013 16:51

Never heard it before but I like it Smile

Why would masculine be so bad anyway?

EnjoyEverySandwich · 03/09/2013 17:31

If kids want to tease, they'll find something.

I think people make too much of a big deal about teasing anyway. Children need to learn to deal with teasing. It's character-building.
