Honor?

I love this name but DH is not keen - he says it makes him think of a 1960s court room with orange plastic chairs!! I think it's a beautiful classic unusual girls name with a lovely meaning - probably the only name I've been really keen on (boy or girl) throughout this pregnancy! What do you think? How can I convince him? He thinks a nickname would be 'Ho' but that's like saying Gary's would be called Gay or something! Can anyone think of some nice nicknames for a girl called Honor?

I looked after a baby honor earlier this year and it was such a refreshing change to the usual names. Not sure about nicknames other than honny

squoosh · 03/09/2013 14:33

Love it, don't think it has any obvious nicknames.

Beeyump · 03/09/2013 14:34

I absolutely LOVE Honor. Why does it need to be shortened though? It's fine as it is. I don't get the nickname obsession.

squoosh · 03/09/2013 14:35

Me either Beeyump! Most people I know aren't known by nicknames.

Leeds2 · 03/09/2013 14:38

Gorgeous name. Can't think of any obvious nicknames. Certainly not Ho, imo.

TenToWine · 03/09/2013 14:40

I like Honor. I know a little one who is sometimes referred to as Honey which is cute (although I guess not an obvious nickname when spoken given the H is pronounced in one and silent in the other).

Beeyump · 03/09/2013 14:41

Does your dh have any alternatives to offer?

stargirl1701 · 03/09/2013 14:42

Honor Harrington is a fictional hero in the series by David Weber. I love the name!

ThursdayLast · 03/09/2013 14:44

I love it!
Completely original these days, haven't seen it or heard of one recently. I can't imagine it being shortened at all.

Or maybe Hon, like in The Pursuit of Love Smile

aoife24 · 03/09/2013 15:33

It's a beautiful and elegant name and it's not that common.

Lastofthepodpeople · 03/09/2013 15:38

I think it's a lovely name. Can't see it being shortened to Ho at all.

EnjoyEverySandwich · 03/09/2013 15:41

I don't really like it. It's a name that can sound ridiculous when combined with the wrong surname, like Iona.

Collaborate · 03/09/2013 15:43

I love it. But then again I would. It's my daughter's name.

Go for it.

Corygal · 03/09/2013 15:44

Yes yes yes. She couldn't fail to be fair of face and dignified.

eurochick · 03/09/2013 15:46

I love it and it's on our shortlist if we ever have a child.

Cassieyellow · 03/09/2013 17:03

See my thread on this on the next page..i asked last week. Lucky for me, my husband is up for it. Hope you get to use it.

SirTrollington · 03/09/2013 17:33

Call it Snebtrex.

violator · 03/09/2013 17:53

I know an Honor, she's the on/off partner of DH's friend.
As he says, "I don't know if he's Honor or off her."

I do like the name.

goingdownhill · 03/09/2013 21:40

I have an Honor so obviously I adore the name. We never ever shorten her name I think that is just me though as I don't shorten any of my childrens names. Smile

CheckpointCharlie · 03/09/2013 21:44

A lovely choice OP.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 03/09/2013 22:43

Honor Harris is the heroine and narrator of my favourite Daphne du Maurier book - The Kings General. She is feisty, loyal and intelligent. I have never met a 'real' one. It's a superb name.

MrsMongoose · 04/09/2013 01:12

Hate it. I know it's the right spelling, but I miss the U so much. Feels wrong to look at.

MrsMongoose · 04/09/2013 01:13

Also, the one I know (22) was plagued as a teenager by boys wanting 'to get on her'.

RoadToTuapeka · 04/09/2013 02:42

I don't really like it. But I don't tend to like names that indicate a virtue or a character trait that not everyone might live up to eg also Grace.

amiready · 08/09/2013 19:01

Thanks everyone! DH overruled and baby born last week - not an Honor this time, but maybe next time! Showed him this thread and he said he liked it more than before but not enough to go for it - but did say maybe next time! Ah well.
