Jetta for a girl?

jbakedbean · 27/08/2013 00:44

Just found out from logging on to mums net tat the name we did have picked out as a front runner has had the curse of Katie price calling her son a similar name so now I think we need to change tack.

Just in case though what do my fellow mums betters think of jetta for a girl?

I don't know about the Clifford the dog references and have never heard of the car (ignorant, I know!) but I think it's a beautiful name. It's not the same name as used by Katie Price either, so no problem.

I'd probably suggest using the spelling Jette for a girl. She'll end up spelling this name out quite a bit anyway, but at least it's not the same spelling as the car! There are plenty of Kier's around, pronounced the same as the Ford Kia and no one seems too fussed.

xx

p.s. isn't Jet the gemstone? I'd probably go with something like Amber or Jade as strong gem-like names xx

A horrible name. Sounds too rough for a girl

Ugly car. Scirocco though, that has a ring :)

She had a boy. You are naming a girl. Confused. Really horrible name for a child and she would be teased the whole time. Why on Earth would anyone look to Jordan as a role model for name choices Hmm.

Jetta is a car and it is not an ugly one Hmm.

When it's a Scandinavian name it's pronounced 'Yetta', the same way they pronounce 'Jan' as 'Yan'. I automatically think 'Yetta', not the car but that is not the association you are looking for.

No nothing about cars.
Did think of Clifford though cos Jetta - mac's owner - is a showy-offy character without many redeeming features.

i like the name though Wink

Prefer Polo or Golf myself.

Never heard of the car myself. If you like the name, use it.

I personally like Jetta - and the Scandic / jet rock connotations - and by the time your daughter is older the car will probably be out of circulation! But if it's worrying you, how about Etta? Or going for a different kind of Scandic name? x best of luck it's so tricky isn't it!

Jetta is a car, and one that has been around for years, so very widely known.

You are kidding yourself if you think people won't immediately think "car". You might as well call her Weetabix and expect people not to think "cereal".

It hasn't done Jenson Button any harm being named after a car!

And the Mercedes car is named after a girl.

It made me instantly think of Rosetta Stone and those adverts are extremely annoying!!!

Never heard of a car called Jenson.

Or Button.

Jensen cars haven't been around for ages.

Most people on this thread said car, therefore it's well known enough.

Ouch roadtotupeka. Since I have a german mother, I do have the pleasure in England of an "out there" name, have never felt inflicted and have always enjoyed knowing very few people would be able to consider identity fraud and the fact I am the only one with my full name in the country.

In Scandinavia it is pronounced "yetta" however this is the same as Jessica being pronounced "yessica" in other languages isn't it.

I'm pleased it wasn't a total attack on the name although overwhelmingly negative and thank you to those with constructive criticism and for the other suggestions. I'll have a think and let you know if I'm brave enough.

I don't think the problem with the name is that it is unusual. More that it is very strongly associated with the car and almost nothing else. It might be worth knowing that VW rarely change the names of their cars so Jetta as a car name is likely to be around for the next twenty years as it has been for the last twenty.

I like unusual names, and have one myself, I suspect I am the only person in the world with my name combination and like that. I'd just pick a different unusual name instead of Jetta, or something longer that could have Jetta as a shortening (like your boys names). I see that Beyond the Name has Jetta as a diminutive of Henrietta.

Jette is a dutch girl's name, pronounced Jetta/Yetta.

I'm not a car person but I still think car. It just doesn't work, sorry.

Jetta could be a short form of Marietta - which I think is a beautiful name.
Wasn't the car a Vauxhall??

No it's a VW sedan. According to Wiki there have been 10 million plus sold since 1980, although not always in the UK.

I've not heard of the car, but would presume Jetta was Scandinavian/German/Dutch and pronounced Yetta. Jette is a prettier spelling imo.

Why? Just why? Why would you do this to a child?
