6 days to go and thought we'd decided on Elsa then came across Maya. Opinions please?

Love.
Was on the list for all my girls, but none of them looked like a Maya. I then tried to bully persuade my sis into naming her baby Maya, but she didn't look like one either.

AlfalfaMum · 14/08/2013 16:30

Love Elsa too :)

Nicknamegrief · 14/08/2013 16:33

Love it, daughters middle name so biased. My sister in law liked it too, called her daughter it (3 months later).

ginmakesitallok · 14/08/2013 16:34

Dd2's name, so love it!

I love it but I went to school with somebody named Maya and had a bit of trouble with the pronunciation. Lots of explaining that it was pronounced Mya not Maya (like mayonnaise). If you are going for the Mya version maybe think about spelling it that way? Sorry to be negative. As I said, I've always loved the name and think it is beautiful.

resipsa · 14/08/2013 16:39

Worked with a Maya once. She was a stunner. Like the name. Unusual but simple.

idiot55 · 14/08/2013 16:39

I deal with a lot of kids in my job and never seem to get the pronunciation right!

Spell as you want it to be pronounced!

WhispersOfWickedness · 14/08/2013 16:41

How funny, this name was on the cbeebies birthday cards slot today. When she lifted the card up, I assumed it was pronounced May-a but then the presenter pronounced it My-a, so I would say that you might get problems with pronunciation Confused
It is a nice name though, whichever way it's pronounced Smile I prefer Elsa, though, it was on my list for DD, but she ended up being Rosa Smile

ginmakesitallok · 14/08/2013 16:49

Maia?

Kezztrel · 14/08/2013 16:53

I've always thought it was pronounced My-a - never heard May-a pronunciation. It's pretty, but a bit wet and nothingy to me. Much prefer Elsa.

Medal · 14/08/2013 16:58

My daughter's middle name too, love it Smile. We pronounce it My-a.

squoosh · 14/08/2013 17:10

I think it's a bit of a blah name, so interchangeable with all the Mias and Maias and nowhere near as nice as Elsa.

ImpulsePineapple · 14/08/2013 17:19

Love it. Wanted it for DD2, but DH vetoed. Much prefer it to Elsa.

NadiaWadia · 14/08/2013 17:19

If I saw Maya I would assume pronounced to rhyme with fire. Lovely name.

NadiaWadia · 14/08/2013 17:21

Elsa is nice, but Maya is lovely. Exotic and international too!

MoonHare · 14/08/2013 18:59

Elsa is much nicer than Maya imo. Don't really like Maya, Mia, Maia any of those.

Stokes · 14/08/2013 19:19

Much prefer Elsa. Maya is a nice name, but I know lots of little Mayas, Mias etc (and I know very few children).

Rhubarbgarden · 14/08/2013 20:26

Dislike

TheBleedinObvious · 15/08/2013 21:50

I originally thought it was pronounced may-a.

Then I met several and got used to saying my-a.

Then the other day I met a may-a.

Confused
mindyourownbusiness · 15/08/2013 21:58

My local indian restaurant is called Myah - err.... so that'll be a 'No' Grin

mindyourownbusiness · 15/08/2013 22:00

Maya - sorry. There are lots of Indian restaurants called that I believe so it would just remind me of my favourite curry.

Wallison · 15/08/2013 22:07

I think it's a lovely name that 'travels well' iyswim - could fit into a lot of different countries and cultures. I am a bit biased though because I know a lovely Maya - she is very cool (and very beautiful - wonder if it's the same person resipsa?).

JacqueslePeacock · 15/08/2013 22:07

Think your DD might have confusion over spelling, what with Maia, Maer, Mya and all. Elsa is OK. Eliza is nice...? Any others you like?

JacqueslePeacock · 15/08/2013 22:11

Martha? (Trying to think of a cross between Maya and Elsa!)
