Brother for Beatrix?

Hi all

Our baby boy is due in 2 months, a brother for Beatrix.

Having been set on Oscar as a name for months, I have only just realised how popular it is - not that popular per se is bad but we've enjoyed having Beatrix's name being slightly different and Oscar feels very safe by comparison.

Alternatives are Rufus (worried that it sounds too posh) and Albert (husband is obsessed by, but my name is Victoria, so don't really want to end up in situations where I am introducing us as Victoria and Albert).

Our surname rules out any names with an "n" in them or ending in "y" or "ie".

Thoughts welcome on..

Oscar
Rufus
Albert

...as well as alternatives!!!

thanks

Oscar - this is VERY popular where I live
Rufus - not keen
Albert - Like this, love Albie as a nn but then you say no 'ie' names

Alternatives:

Leo
Theodore
Jasper

Love Rufus!

Other names I think go well with Beatrix-

William
Raphael
James

HaPPy8 · 07/08/2013 09:30

Rufus is nice. I think Beatrix sounds more 'posh' than Rufus. Although I don't see that as a bad thing anyway, there are just nice names.

Queazy · 07/08/2013 09:30

Albert or Arthur - so lovely

hatebeak · 07/08/2013 09:37

Rufus is nice, although I understand your concerns. How about:
Robin
Leon
Seth
Gilbert
Julian

Rufus is amazing!
I know 2 under 1 in N London so not that rare (here anywy)

camberwellred · 07/08/2013 11:58

My son has a lovely friend called Ingo. Beatrix & Ingo?

What's your heritage, any versatility?

monkeymamma · 07/08/2013 22:57

Ivo or Ivor, maybe?
Rufous not especially posh, but in conjunction with Beatrix (also not crazily posh) the two sound v posh together to me!
Kit feels like the right era and would be cute with Beatrix.

CruCru · 08/08/2013 18:41

Rufus is nice but will get shortened to Roof. Will that bug you?

Albert - wasn't one of his and Victoria's daughters called Beatrice? I might be wrong but probably worth googling - think Beatrice is traditionally a royal "German" name.

Oscar is popular where we live but I love it. It was vetoed by DH.

CruCru · 08/08/2013 18:44

Alternatives?

Charles
Edmund
Francis
Hugh
Rupert
Sebastian

Onesleeptillwembley · 08/08/2013 18:52

Hugh
William
Peter
Edward.
I don't think your names 'go' with Beatrix, although they are nice.

LaGuerta · 08/08/2013 19:11

Oscar - v popular.
Albert and its derivations I would say are as popular as Oscar at the moment.
I like Rufus, but prefer Rupert.

My immediate thought on what goes with Beatrix is Joseph.

Love Rufus, not keen on Albert or Oscar.
How about:
Jasper
Dominic
Peter
Nicholas

You may come back round to Oscar!

Plundering Queen Victoria's family tree, how about her youngest son's name, Leopold?

Or sons-in-law Frederick and Christian?

I hadn't thought of Rufus as posh, Rupert and Tristram probably fall into that category.

Beatrix could go with a continental flavour possibly like Dirk, Bram or Otto (realms of fantasy).

blueblizz · 09/08/2013 18:41

Beatrix is a beautiful name. I'm not keen on Rufus as it certainly sounds like a dog to me, sorry. I'm a teacher and a bit over sensitive on names!!! I'm due my d2 in a month so know how you feel!!!
I like Ocsar a lot and agree that Albert with your name is quite funny. There seems to be a real trend for Albert and Arthur atm. I like the suggestion of Theo and William. You may want to avoid George but what about Henry? I know you don't like y endings but I think it sounds strong. I'm sure that you will choose another lovely name. Good luck.

Caip · 10/08/2013 15:46

I'm a Ruth and so don't like Rufus as I get called it! Agree Oscar is too popular now

I love Peter too ginger
I also like
Edwin
Casper
Daniel
Robin

Isaac
Casper

Thanks everyone for your comments. From this I've concluded that;
A) Oscar is indeed popular - but we may use it anyway
B) albert is becoming popular and lots of people like it but this doesn't make the Victoria and Albert issue go away
C) Rufus is more liked than I'd thought but people who don't like it tend to hate it.

I like lots of the alternatives including Casper, Jasper, Theodore, Rafe, Joseph. It's just a question of finding a name my DH also likes - the toughest thing of all!!
