Would you make this connection?

We are narrowing down our baby name list as baby is due next month and DH and I really liked the name Frederick nn Freddie. Unfortunately the first part of our surname is West and we now aren't sure if we can use the name Freddie.

Would the Fred West connection take this name off the llist for you?

I don't think I would want any connection to Fred West tbh, although it won't mean so much to a younger generation.

cheeseandchive · 06/08/2013 21:20

If I heard the name I would definitely think of the connection and wonder why the parents had chosen it!

Sorry!

IHeartKingThistle · 06/08/2013 21:21

I would, sorry. Other kids won't though, unless stupid parents tell them. Which happens.

cheeseandchive · 06/08/2013 21:22

Yes, it mightn't mean much to his peers as he grows up, but it will to people in their mid-20s and older (school staff, DRs, other parents etc)

PareyMortas · 06/08/2013 21:22

Yes. I wouldn't do it. It's not just a connection to a well known person it's a connection to a child killer.

FrootLoops · 06/08/2013 21:24

That's that we thought, thanks for confirming it. I don't know how it took us so long to make the connection ourselves but it's definitely off the list.

nooooo

BikeRunSki · 06/08/2013 21:25

I would, sorry.
Good name though, DD would have been a Frederick. Could you call him Friederick and nn Rick?

squeak2392 · 06/08/2013 21:29

The name means nothing to me.

toobreathless · 06/08/2013 21:31

I would make the connection.

Wilfred could give you NN Freddie?

SirChenjin · 06/08/2013 21:33

Yes, I would absolutely make this connection - it's like calling a child Myra Hindley or Ian Brady.

trolleycoin · 06/08/2013 21:36

yes I would make this connection, sorry OP

BrianTheMole · 06/08/2013 21:38

I would make this connection too. Dont do it.

steppemum · 06/08/2013 21:46

I would only make the connection if the surname was West. If the surname is longer Westwood, Western, Westly etc, then it wouldn't even occur to me.
Also, if he is Freddie or Frederick, then it isn't the same as Fred

Alisvolatpropiis · 06/08/2013 22:50

I would make the connection. Sorry Sad

squoosh · 06/08/2013 22:57

Fred West is going to remain a very famous figure in British crime for decades to come.

I'd make the connection, even if he was called Freddie Westfield or something.

Onyabike · 06/08/2013 23:03

I would make the connection too, sorry Sad

exoticfruits · 06/08/2013 23:15

I would - I think the majority would and so would have a different name.

GW297 · 07/08/2013 01:27

Yes. Don't do it!

Queazy · 07/08/2013 09:36

I think anyone in the UK would make the connection - have you got any other favourites?

rowtunda · 07/08/2013 11:27

Don't do it

driftwoodsands · 07/08/2013 12:08

Agree with the majority of other posters. I would make the connection and feel a bit Hmm about it. Sorry.
