I know of a Herbie, and that's his full name.

Americans seem to pronounce the same 'herb', but say 'erbs' for herbs. This has always baffled me.

Name, not same!

I like Herbie. I don't see a problem with it as the full name as this is a generation of Alfies, Charlies and Archies etc so will hardly raise eyebrows in the future.

I don't usually like American names but I do like Herb.

Herbert is fine - shortened to Herb if you will (though prefer Bertie).

But Herb as a name???? NO. He won't thank you when he's older.

I've a work colleague called Herb, he seems OK with it. But we are in Canada and lots of people have names that seem slightly odd to my ears.

Herb is great in my opinion. A suitably unusual!
