Do you like the name Victor? Help!!

Hi All, I am 5 months pregnant and we started thinking about a name for our baby. We really like the name Victor (Wiktor in Polish) , but people reactions are not very enthusiastic. I don't want to harm the baby giving him an odd name!! We are also considering Maximilan (Max) but I quite like Victor... And what spelling sounds better to your Victor or Wiktor. Thanks :)

I think it's a lovely, strong name. I would spell it Victor, but depending on where you are, Wiktor would also be fine.

I love it, it was on my list for my last DC.

I prefer Victor but that is probably because I am English. If you are Polish then perfectly acceptable to spell it Wiktor.

Oh, and it's not an odd name at all. It is a bit old fashioned, but it's not like you're calling him Depressed Cupboard Cheesecake (yes, somebody really did name their kid that once...)

I like both Victor and Maximilian.

I like it! It's strong and on the acceptable side of old fashioned Victor probably has less scope for misunderstanding than Wiktor, if you are planning to stay in the UK.

I'd put it on a par with Bernard, Neville and Cedric.

Not my taste at all but maybe a cute little Victor could make me rethink.

I prefer Victor to Max or its variants, too. I would go for the Victor spelling if your son is going to be born here and you plan to stay - he can always be called Wiktor when you are in Poland.

Victor is one of the engines in Thomas. It's a nice, strong name :)

Thank you very much for all your comments which I found very helpful! :) Yes, we are planning to stay in the UK (Scotland) so I think you are right that going with the Wiktor spelling would be a bit confusing. Wiktor is a bit old fashioned name in Poland too but it's becoming more and more popular now, so I was curious if it's same in here. Thanks again, I think we are going to stick with Victor :)

OP, have you ever seen Still Game? It's a really popular Scottish comedy about two old men called Jack and Victor. It would put me off tbh.

I think it's an excellent name.

Strong, and can be shortened to Vic, which fits with the currect old man chic thing.

We have used it, as it's a family name, but only as one of my son's middle name - wasn't quite brave enough to use it as a first name. There are so many Maxes, but I don't know any Victors.

And FWIW, I wouldn't worry about the Returned connection - I can't imagine that the percentage of the population watching it is very large! In any case, the second series hasn't even started filming yet, so people will have forgotten by then (and in actual fact his real name is Louis anyway (think I may have watched too much of it!)).

I think the Polish spelling is really nice and although its Polish I don't think it is too confusing for your average UK citizen. The W and V sound is comman knowledge.

Which spelling works best with your surname. If you have a W surname then maybe the Polish version would look good.

BTW. I love Polish surnames. I am sure it's because I play a lot of scrabble and any word that can contain J's Z's C's and K's in close proximity looks fantastic too me.

Victor is a cool name and much more interesting than Max (which had become a little overused imo).

I love it, I bloody love it! It was on our list and it just didn't suit him when he arrived. I also love Max, but there are so many of them about.
