I like the name Pippa - but I'm not keen on Philippa. Can it be short for anything else? I'd quite happily just name the baby Pippa but my DH doesn't like it on its own - he thinks there should be a more formal name attached to it,

Maybe Penelope, it has the double p sound.

You do know about the colourful translations for Pippa in various other languages?

Choccyhobnob · 24/07/2013 14:14

Yes I think Pippa is rude in about 5 languages! lol

Wbdn28 · 24/07/2013 14:30

No, it's short for Philippa.

Bumbolina · 24/07/2013 14:52

Oh no I didn't realise that! Maybe I'll rethink Grin

Yes if she goes to Greece, Turkey, Spain she'll have to use a different name. Grin

dyslexicdespot · 24/07/2013 14:58

Pippi is an incredibly rube slang word for penetrative sex in Swedish. I have such a hard time not laughing every time I hear about Pippa's lastest exploits!

GwenCooper81 · 24/07/2013 14:58

My youngest is Pip, short for Piper -hated on here I think-
Strangely many of her classmates call her Pippa Smile

Not relevant but I just wanted to share Grin

VivaLeBeaver · 24/07/2013 15:09

Wasn't Pippi Longstocking Swedish!

dyslexicdespot · 24/07/2013 15:13

Pippi not Pippa.

Astrid Lindgren's daughter came up with Pippi langstrumps name. I am not certain about the origins of Pippa.

plummyjam · 24/07/2013 15:14

FWIW I think Philippa is a beautiful name. Lots of nickname potential - Phil, Philly, Pip, Pippa but also sounds very sophisticated when used in full.

burberryqueen · 24/07/2013 15:15

i am sure Pippa is slang for vagina in Polish

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 24/07/2013 15:16

Hope she won't have any Polish friends...

burberryqueen · 24/07/2013 15:16

haha hi-five fatherjack!

squoosh · 24/07/2013 15:17

blowjob in Greek.

UriGeller · 24/07/2013 15:17

Sorry, i don't like it. It's too twee.

cathpip · 24/07/2013 15:18

Hahaha, my dd whose name is Phillipa (Pippa/Pips)will be truly delighted when she visits these countries!

Bumbolina · 24/07/2013 15:45

Yep - think its well and truly off my list now Grin

Uri - don't really care if you like it or not, as that isn't what I asked. There will always be someone who hates the name!

Means 'wank' in Italian.

8thplace · 24/07/2013 17:10

i love the name Pippa,

And Ive never heard of any of these rude connections. (uk based)

Alisvolatpropiis · 24/07/2013 17:55

How has Pippa passed to be a perfectly acceptable name in the UK and yet is outrageously rude in so many languages?!

squoosh · 24/07/2013 18:08

It is actually the Filthiest Name in The World.

It's worse than Titty or Fanny.

gettingeasiernow · 24/07/2013 18:39

Phyllida. Although that usually shortens to Dilly.
