boy's name help!

DS (or DD?) due in two weeks! having real difficulty agreeing on a boy's name, there are literally no names we both like and that go with our surname so compromise is necessary. Lots of girl's names options on the other hand so almost hoping for a girl so that we can pick a name we both like.

So we have the following shortlist of sorts, in each case one of us likes and the other is tolerant but a bit "meh". We may have agreed on Alexander for middle name but that's a thread for another day and first things first, eh?

Honest opinions on the following welcomed!!

BTW we have both strong Scottish and welsh connections but we live in England.

I like Elliot, Tristan and Leo, and think Tristan goes best with Alexander. Tristan Alexander would be a great name

What are your girls options? Just to get a better idea of taste as the boys list is quite disparate I think.

My favourites from your list are Fraser, Elliot and Iwan. Leo is okay but I'm not keen on Tristan (a bit posh!) and Brendan is not to my taste at all. I'm imagining a middle aged man in a cardigan.

Being a Scot, I probably would substitute Euan or Ewan for Iwan but I'd through in Gethin to represent the Welsh side :o

We don't actually know any Tristans so it feels very neutral to both of us, unlike almost any other name which has some connotation or other.

For girls we're thinking Isla, Elsa/ Ailsa, Poppy, Penelope, Rose/Rosie

re Tristan - I'm probably harking back to that George and Mildred sitcom when Tristram was the posh little boy next door :o

Is Gethin hard to pronounce? I thought you just say it as it looks

I think Isla and Elsa/Ailsa are similar in feel to Fraser & Iwan (and Gethin :o ), Rose/Rosie is similar in feel to Elliot and Leo and Tristan is similar to Poppy and Penelope. Brendan is theme all by itself :o

George and Mildred... I had forgotten them!

I love Frase and I think Fraser Alexender goes well. I see Brendan as an old name, but I must admit there have been a few Brendans recently. I am not keen on Tristan, i think it reminds me of Home and Away or Neighbours? Elliot and Iwan don't offend me, but neither do they grab either...not keen on Leo (Leo the Lion is all I can think about?!)

Fraser, Kerr and Ross are on my shortlist for boys names although DH thinks it'll be getting named after him if we have a boy...

I wanted Kerr April. OH wanted Ciaran.....so we have Ciar :)

We had Kirsty or Mairi for girls but my current favourite is Lorna.

we also talked about Ross for No1 son - that ended up as a choice between Gregor and Craig. I liked Fraser a lot but it was OHs ex's Dad so not a good choice - especially as he was a bit of an a'hole.

Fabulous name IMHO and quite like Kerr/Ciaran?

Tristan definately! Great strong classic that isn't overused.

I don't like Brendan or Iwan and find Elliot a little feminine (esp. the nickname Ellie).

Gethin might be a non-runner but that's my favourite.

So I dont see the issue with Gethin either, I think dh is using Pronunciation concerns as an excuse.

Brendan now off the list (thanks!) as is Iwan for first name purposes.
Fraser is prob my favourite but we have a Scottish (mc..) surname which means it goes nicely but eg Fraser Alexander Mc... Sounds "too" scottish to me, given that despite having a Scottish granddad, the child will have a very English upbringing. Given that I'm actually welsh, this doesnt sit comfortabLy with me so need to try and wangle some welshness or failing that some neutrality in there somewhere.

On another note, do you prefer Isla Penelope or Isla Genevieve? and is Isla as ridiculously popular as all that? We dont know any, but dont really know any school age children.
