What do you think of the name Kilda for a girl? I saw a boat called Kilda when I was on holiday and really liked it. I also like Hilda but my partner thinks of witches...

Kilda sounds made up, sorry.

And Noooooooooooooo to Hilda. Ogden.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 17/07/2013 22:00

I've heard of St Kilda, not sure who or what it is apart from a place :) I sort of like it.

Layl77 · 17/07/2013 22:05

Starts with kill. Don't like Hilda either sorry but whatever floats your boat Wink

EhricLovesTeamQhuay · 17/07/2013 22:07

Killed her...

moastina · 17/07/2013 22:10

Killed her.. LOL! Never thought of that.
Yes St Kilda is an island, I like the Scottish islands Isla, Iona, Morven etc.

Kill da what?

TheKnackeredChef · 17/07/2013 22:11

So long as your surname isn't Fox, King, Baker, Bishop, Bird or Kent, it might be OK?

MustafaCake · 17/07/2013 22:16

Now Isla, Iona and Morvern are much nicer!

NickyNackyNooNoo · 17/07/2013 22:23

First thing I thought was reservoir - I know it's a different spelling but you usually hear a name rather than see it.

millymae · 17/07/2013 22:26

What about Gilda. Google it and you'll see that Rita Heyworth played her in a film of the same name in the 40's

Still18atheart · 17/07/2013 22:27

I really like it

PixelAteMyFace · 17/07/2013 22:30

You want to name your baby after a boat? Confused

Kilda is an awful name, but slightly better than Titanic Wink

MerryMarigold · 17/07/2013 22:32

I actually like Kilda, despite thinking the nn would be 'kill'. I like 'Cillian' as well and that starts with 'kill'.

There will be jokes throughout her life.

MerryMarigold · 17/07/2013 22:33

Oh, Hilda - no way.

DorisIsWaiting · 17/07/2013 22:42

St Kilda is an Island somewhere . My parents had a house named that (pre them moving in... they ignored the name and just used the number!)

Not convinced at all!

moastina · 17/07/2013 22:48

millymae, yes, Gilda definitely an option - like it.

soontobeslendergirl · 17/07/2013 22:50

I've never heard Kilda being used as a name in the same way as the other Islands, you'd totally get away with it in Scotland but in the South where they add an eroneous "r" everywhere, it doesn't sound as nice - soi I guess it depends on where you live.

Ailsa is nice a a wee bit less popular than Iona or Isla

Frettchen · 17/07/2013 22:52

I'd go with Kelda rather than Kilda. But then it's a Pratchett reference, hence the appeal.

MrsOakenshield · 17/07/2013 22:56

St Kilda is in Melbourne and it's main street is lined with amazing cake shops with fantastic displays

I quite like it but think unless your Scottish no-one will understand why you'd choose it.

soontobeslendergirl · 17/07/2013 23:01

What about Gigha? pronounced Gee ah

sillymillyb · 17/07/2013 23:03

Was just going to suggest Kelso too!

sillymillyb · 17/07/2013 23:04

Arse... I meant kelda but autocorrect changed it! Oops!

Graceparkhill · 17/07/2013 23:07

How about Tilda ( as in Swinton? ) presume it s short for Matilda.

squoosh · 18/07/2013 00:05

There seems to be a craze for naming children after Scottish islands, St Kilda is a pretty bleak and unhospitable one though, it's been depopulated.

So on balance, no I don't really like it.

TalkativeJim · 18/07/2013 00:50

LOL at Kelso.

Why not just call her Galashiels and be done with it Grin
