What do you think of the name Kilda for a girl? I saw a boat called Kilda when I was on holiday and really liked it. I also like Hilda but my partner thinks of witches...

St Kilda in Melbourne also has lots of junkies and prostitutes, not exactly something I would want associated with my daughter.

Don't like it.

cafecito · 18/07/2013 02:56

No

You can do worse than Scottish place names. Grabs a map, close your eyes and point -great way of choosing book character names.

How about Rannoch Laggan for a boy, and Skye Kentra for a girl.

Job done Grin

Kilda is actually okay, though not by the descriptions ^ of people who have actually seen it.

MalcolmTuckerSwearsBy · 18/07/2013 07:14

Ps, should have explained I chose the names abve by doing just that, a simple map experiment.

ArabellaBeaumaris · 18/07/2013 07:15

I love Hilda. I think it's really nice.

BlueStarsAtNight · 18/07/2013 07:33

I quite like Kelda and Hilda, but Kilda just makes me think "killed a what?", so I don't like it.

Meringue33 · 18/07/2013 07:36

I like it

WhoeverHeardOfAWormskinRug · 18/07/2013 07:41

Only if her middle name is "Wabbit" Wink

kelda · 18/07/2013 13:13

Obviously prefer Kelda, it works very well as a MN nickname.

Kilda is far better then Hilda.

Tilda, short for Matilda, is nice.

AntsMarching · 18/07/2013 13:15

I know a Gilda (will be 40ish now), beautiful woman and beautiful name.

Choccyhobnob · 18/07/2013 13:19

I think Tilda is nice or Zelda?

moastina · 18/07/2013 13:32

Yes, we're in Scotland but I'm Swedish so the struggle really is to find something that works nicely in both languages. Kelda is quite nice but it's a margarine brand in Sweden. Would be a bit like calling her Lurpak.. Kelso, Galashiels... LOL
I think Gilda is the best option. I've always liked Gil as a NN on both boys and girls.

I have a cousin called kilda (named after the island) and it has always seemed to me to be a lovely strong unique name. I personally have never made the association with 'kill' but yes it does depend upon your surname (which if it is swedish may be less of a problem) and I do appear to be in the minority!

moastina · 18/07/2013 19:49

Nice one!! So cool that there is a Kilda out there! It have never met someone with the name but according to the statistics there are 4 girls called Kilda in Sweden!
I never thought of "Kill"either, in my head i pronounce it more like "keelda" if that makes sense, Scottish sound I guess.

kelda · 18/07/2013 21:22

I think you should go for it. It;s a real name, easy to pronounce, you obviously like it.

Rhubarbgarden · 18/07/2013 23:22

I rather like it.

onepreviouslover · 19/07/2013 09:11

I think Kilda is nice, unusual, unique.

zoetstoffen · 19/07/2013 09:36

I think it's lovely - I would use it myself if I didn't already have a Kester.

bassingtonffrench · 19/07/2013 10:27

I rather like it. I would immediately think of the island, which is a world heritage site I believe

forgetmenots · 20/07/2013 12:10

Never heard it before but like it, would be lovely in Scotland and Sweden :)

manicinsomniac · 21/07/2013 01:56

I really like it.

When I was about 9 I decided I was going to have triplet girls and call them Kilda, Iona and Skye! Grin
I think I was obsessed with Kilda - it has a very sad history if you don't know about it (or even if you do in fact, it's still sad!)

mathanxiety · 21/07/2013 07:15

Nice and I like Hilda too..

NowPlayingZone · 22/07/2013 22:05

Not keen, sorry.
