What do you think of the name Kilda for a girl? I saw a boat called Kilda when I was on holiday and really liked it. I also like Hilda but my partner thinks of witches...

When I was about 9 I decided I was going to have triplet girls and call them Kilda, Iona and Skye!
I think I was obsessed with Kilda - it has a very sad history if you don't know about it (or even if you do in fact, it's still sad!)

Nice one!! So cool that there is a Kilda out there! It have never met someone with the name but according to the statistics there are 4 girls called Kilda in Sweden!
I never thought of "Kill"either, in my head i pronounce it more like "keelda" if that makes sense, Scottish sound I guess.

I have a cousin called kilda (named after the island) and it has always seemed to me to be a lovely strong unique name. I personally have never made the association with 'kill' but yes it does depend upon your surname (which if it is swedish may be less of a problem) and I do appear to be in the minority!

Yes, we're in Scotland but I'm Swedish so the struggle really is to find something that works nicely in both languages. Kelda is quite nice but it's a margarine brand in Sweden. Would be a bit like calling her Lurpak.. Kelso, Galashiels... LOL
I think Gilda is the best option. I've always liked Gil as a NN on both boys and girls.

You can do worse than Scottish place names. Grabs a map, close your eyes and point -great way of choosing book character names.

How about Rannoch Laggan for a boy, and Skye Kentra for a girl.

There seems to be a craze for naming children after Scottish islands, St Kilda is a pretty bleak and unhospitable one though, it's been depopulated.

So on balance, no I don't really like it.
