A friend of a friend is called Nikita (sp?) and had Kitty from birth. I think she's using her full name now though.

I know a Kristen known as Kitty. I think some people use do it for the Chris- names (as Kit is for Christopher).

My first name is Katya, but I've mostly been known as Kitty instead. I love my name, and so far I've not met anyone else with it

Aww thanks bootsy! I think there are a couple of pronunciations for it, mine is pronounced Ka-tee-ya but I've also heard it pronounced Kat-cha.

I think it's actually a diminutive of Yekaterina, which is Russian for Katherine.

I've got a 2 year old Kitty who is Kathleen on her birth certificate.

My friends daughter is Kitty, real name Kaitlyn, which she hates so decided she wanted to be called Kitty.

I have a Kitty, but that's on her birth cert. it's a name in its own right from the 16th century. We love it and did consider using a name on her birth cert that could be shortened but we decided we just liked Kitty so went with that.

My DD3 is Keturah shortened to Kitty

Mhysa I am not in the least bit exotic, or Russian for that matter! My mother has French and Swedish ancestry and my paternal grandparents originate from the West Indies but neither have much correlation with my name.

Yet I find my name suits me perfectly! I say go for it! because I'm clearly not biased or anything

...this nickname thing, where I come from a nickname is derogatory or mocking, perhaps playing on a weakness or failing or negative trait of a family or family member, therefore I do not understand why parents want to give children nicknames.
To shorten a name, give it a derivative, e.g. Kitty,Kate or Katie for Katherine or Catherine; Bob, Bobby Rob, Robbie for Robert; Will, Willy, Liam for William; I can understand all of these. Why would any parent want to give their child a nickname? I would really appreciate an explanation of this. Thank you
