I like this name, especially the nickname Rudy but our surname ends with an ing so am worried it might sound a bit too close to Kipling

Well, yeh, I'd worry about that too. I read one of his books as an adult and I was shocked by the racism and the sexism. Shocked it was still in print.

I would just pick Rudy. Unless Rudyard is a family name.

Scented out of interest, which book?

I think, fwiw, Gunga Dinn is, for its time, one of the most anti racist poems. I was read it as a child and its inclusive message made a huge impression on me.

Do it OP; it's a lovely name and I think he was a great writer.

OP, I think it would sound too similar.

Scented, it is often a bit shocking when you read older books at what seems like sexism or racism; however, as imade, these works were often very progressive for their time. Think about some examples of how things which are acceptable have changed in your own lifetime (e.g. with regard to gay people or disabled people).

Reading things like that can give you an insight into the mores of the time, and you should be careful of assuming that labels such as 'sexist' or 'racist' are appropriate (even if you wince and have to put the book down, like I sometimes do).

Oooh, I like Rudyard/Rudy! There was a recent post on here about Rudolf/Rudy but Rudyard/Rudy is much better. As long as your surname isn't actually Kipling then I don't think it matters.

Right am going to put it to dh. Have a horrible feeling he is going to veto it.
