Thoughts on Violet Octavia

I like the name very much but am wondering about it becoming a bit popular like Lilly and poppy have as I'm not especially keen on very popular names unless its a family name traditional thing.

So what do you reckon?

I don't know any Violets in RL, and I think it's a beautiful name Grin

Not so sure about Octavia. Sounds a little bit hard to me.

Elquota · 20/06/2013 00:11

Lovely names, and they go really well together.

IneedAsockamnesty · 20/06/2013 00:14

Curious do you mean walking around with a axe type hard or hard to say?

Gorgeous. DD2 has Violet as a middle name. And love Octavia.

DizzyPurple · 20/06/2013 00:19

I really like Violet. It is becoming more popular but far from common. Octavia sounds very 'posh' Never met one in real life. Not for me.. They do go together though.

curiousgeorgie · 20/06/2013 00:19

Just hard next to Violet which is quite soft and pretty Smile

GW297 · 20/06/2013 00:43

Beautiful!

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octavia_Hill

This is why I have taken a liking to Octavia (as well as having one as a aunt)

I was rather concerned that as a first name it would be to unusual to carry off hence adding Violet as a first name but I do think they just gel really well together.

I'm not a fan of Octavia but love the name Violet. I have an Auntie Vi and she is awesome.

IneedAsockamnesty · 20/06/2013 01:01

Oh crap I didn't think about it being shortened to vi, that would give me the rage.

OP posts:
Elquota · 20/06/2013 01:07

Maybe you could introduce Lettie as a nickname instead of Vi?

thequeenmary · 20/06/2013 01:09

Only negative is Violet Elizabeth (as in Just William). But kids probably won't know about that now.

Octavia is quite 'high' but I sort of like it.

IneedAsockamnesty · 20/06/2013 01:09

Are nick names essential? Can't we just put our fingers in our ears and go "lalalala I can't hear you" when people do it?

OP posts:
bugsybill · 20/06/2013 04:28

I really like it.

I think you can control the nicknames while they are little but when they get older they may want to shorten it themselves! It really doesn't need shortening imo as it is short enough, just tell people Violet.

I don't think it will become as popular as the flower names Rosie, Holly, Poppy, Lily, Daisy as they all end with -ee sounds and have a girly, whimsical flavour to them which is what is popular.

Flowers like Iris, Briar, Hazel, Willow and Violet as not as girly and and don't fall into that category as much, so I think it will be fairly popular but not extremely so, so you should be safe. I.e. there may be another Violet in the school, but not in the classroom.

I don't particularly like either name, though I do think they flow nicely together. I wouldn't be able to pick something if I hated the obvious shortening though, as it's so likely she would be called Vi especially when she's older. When I hear Violet all I think of is the purple gum-chewer from Charlie and the chocolate factory!

tammytoby · 20/06/2013 06:59

I think Octavia is a beautiful name with a lovely sound.

Violet I'm not keen on, especially the 'vile' part at the beginning. Nor the nickname Vi.

JacqueslePeacock · 20/06/2013 07:11

I like each name in isolation, but together I think they sound a bit much.

When expecting DS, I did a very useful test of imagining calling out potential names in the supermarket. If I felt like a giant wally, I didn't use the names. I happily got rid of "Orlando Xavier" and "Aloysius Horatio" and several other deranged pregnant musings this way. I guess I just can't see myself being happy to call "Violet Octavia!" in the veg aisle somehow.

Ablababla · 20/06/2013 07:27

Violet Octavia does have a slight Violet Elizabeth ring to it but I guess you won't be stringing them together in a supermarket much! I personally prefer Viola also a flower but somehow more sophisticated.

DoodleAlley · 20/06/2013 07:30

I prefer octavia to violet but love both but not together.

I couldn't put my finger on why Violet Octavia sounded like A spoilt rich child until someone mentioned Violet Elizabeth from Just William which is, I think, where my sleep addled brain gets it from.

I don't know how popular Just William is these days though.

IneedAsockamnesty · 20/06/2013 07:55

It does not bother me at all if the child decides to shorten their name when they are fully verbal its just when adults do it that bugs me.

And in 20 years I don't think I have ever shouted a child's full name in public so not much of a issue.

But I am going to do a vague test today to see how many under 8's are familure with just William.

I think the vile/violent homophones put me off- playground teasing can stoop to anything and the potential for mean chants would put me off (but I've inherited my mother's paranoia, as she gave me a deliberately non-rhyming, non-homophone name!)

MrsBungle · 20/06/2013 07:59

I really like violet. My auntie is called violet and most people call her vi.

I don't really like octavia much.

Meow75 · 20/06/2013 08:02

I'm really sorry ... But I thought it sounded like a Willy Wonka character name when I read your thread title.

runs away from thread REALLY fast
