I like the name very much but am wondering about it becoming a bit popular like Lilly and poppy have as I'm not especially keen on very popular names unless its a family name traditional thing.

So what do you reckon?

It's a pretty combination, works well once the child is adult. I do think a softer middle name like Aurelia or Amelie works a little better.

jalapeno · 21/06/2013 07:15

sockreturningpixie well if you've got it, flaunt it! Wink

If I was rich I would have an Octavia for sure Grin

Exhaustipated · 21/06/2013 09:23

Lovely name but just hope your surname doesn't begin with M?

If no it's great!

turkeyboots · 21/06/2013 09:27

I like it, but is rather gothic. V tragic heroine!

FobblyWoof · 21/06/2013 10:20

I love Violet, sooo much. Octavia just reminds me of the car unfortunately

CruCru · 26/06/2013 21:56

I like Violet. Do you also like Viola?

PunkyPod · 26/06/2013 22:05

I have a Violet (13months) and she's flippin brilliant!

othersideofchannel · 27/06/2013 06:59

Love the name Octavia!
But Violet sounds a little harsh and starts with 'vile' which I'm not keen on. How about Violetta? Pronounced Vee oletta?

PunkyPod · 27/06/2013 08:15

I guess it's how intricately you study a name. My DD is Violet and i don't for 1 second think "vile" or if i say it a bit differently it might sound like "violent". I could say that about many names.... Peter has "pee" at the front of it. George could be pronounced "gorge"...
I've had nothing but compliments about her name, people comment on how lovely it is to see old fashioned names coming back, Violet is a strong and feminine name and I'm just so chuffed we picked something which in our opinion is so awesome :)
If you like it then go for it!

Morgause · 27/06/2013 08:18

I love both names but not together. A bit of a mouthful.

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/06/2013 17:21

That's a really lovely name.

Madamecastafiore · 28/06/2013 17:24

Old women name. Imagine being called Vi!!!

Alisvolatpropiis · 28/06/2013 17:26

I've never met an old woman called Violet...it must be regional!

Loads called Dilys though Grin

Maud2011 · 28/06/2013 23:25

Hehehe Exhaustipated :)

Violet Octavia doesn't quite work for me. While Violet obviously suggests.... well.... violet, Octavia suggests (to me at least) autumnal colours that sit uneasily next to violet. I just think it clashes a bit.

I preferred the idea someone posted above, of Violet Aurelia.

HeffalumpTheFlump · 28/06/2013 23:35

I like violet but really dont like Octavia. It reminds me of dr octavius from spiderman... Sorry.

Scribblegirl · 29/06/2013 09:34

I quite like Octavia. Knew a girl at uni and she shortened it to 'Ocki' which I thought was quite cool (like the line you stand behind at darts!)

CruCru · 29/06/2013 10:49

Thing is, people tend not to use their middle names day to day. So you can choose a more unusual middle name with relatively little impact on your DD.

littlepeas · 29/06/2013 12:36

Both my Grandmother (80's) and mother in law (60's) are called Violet and both hate it - my Gran to the point that she goes by a completely different name - which makes me very cautious about it, even though unlike it myself.

IneedAsockamnesty · 29/06/2013 18:20

Have they ever said why they hate it?

nooka · 29/06/2013 18:33

Totally not my cup of tea, but I can't imagine it is a particularly popular combination, so I would think you would be alright on that front.

I think I probably have some posh bratty associations with the name.

pinkbear82 · 29/06/2013 18:54

my dd is 3 weeks old and is called Violet Rose Smile so it gets my thumbs up.
One of my mum's middle names is violet, she doesn't overly like it - but I think it's really pretty and lovely. At the end if the day if YOU like it that's what matters.

GwendolineMaryLacey · 29/06/2013 20:57

DD2's middle names are Verity Violet and someone on here said it sounded like very violent. Knickers to that. Violet is a gorgeous name and the name of my departed grandmother who was known as Vi

littlepeas · 29/06/2013 21:04

I think my mil finds it a bit dated, as it is more of a name from the previous generation (which I imagine is why it is coming back round now). My Gran has never really said - she goes by Vicky - I think Violet is much prettier!

birdofthenorth · 29/06/2013 22:50

Love Violet, not so keen on Octavia though knew an extremely posh and socially awkward one so that's probably why. I would avoid two three syllable names with a V in together though, don't think if flows v well
