Help me find a naming style

Hey there,

While it's still early on, we are expecting DC3 and have started thinking about names. I don't want to find out this time, so we will have to find a boy and a girl name. We have 2 DSs and I think we'll be ok finding another boy name, but in the girl department it seems DH and I have very different tastes!
Our boys are called Theo.dore and Al.bert, so traditional, familiar but not overly common names.

For girls I like:
Aoibheann/Aoibhinn
Aurelia/Aurora
Allegra
Anais
Ariadne
Athena
Camilla
Cecilia/ Cecily
Constance
Cordelia
Elodie
Eugenia
Hebe
Helena
Henrietta
Hermione
Imogen
Joan
Juno
Lorelai
Mariana
Mirabel
Ottilie
Peony
Persephone
Philippa
Thalia
Tallulah
Tolmiea/Tolmeia
Valentina
Viola

And DH likes:
Emma
Hannah
Lily
Hmm

Recently he came up with Dana; bit I think that's only because he has a crush on Gillian Anderson!!

As you can see there's not much overlap... While I don't dislike his names, they are way too bland and common for my liking. Whereas he thinks my names are too much 'out there'.

Is there anything you can think of that would be in between?

Do you use the dots? Kinda like Will.i.am?

Littlecherublegs · 17/06/2013 16:45

Some of your names aren't too out there like Helena or Imogen.
I can see your DH's point on some of them though like Peony, Hebe and Allegra.

How about:
Scarlett
Flora
Annabel
Eleanor
Jasmine
Wren
Lilian
Cora
Beatrice
Rosa
Orla
Harriet
Nia
Opal
Violet
Gracie
Hazel

Arwhen · 17/06/2013 16:49

Anything no that's just me thinking now it won't show up in search engine results?!
Littlecherub, I like Beatrice but the others all sound a bit meh to me...

helena should suit both surely? that's by far the nicest of your choices

Elquota · 17/06/2013 17:04

I think your style is pretty, elegant, flowery, mainly 3-4 syllables, whereas your DH's style is more classic and a bit plainer (not a bad thing, just down to taste), and 2 syllables. I wonder what sort of names would be halfway between those styles.

AnotherLovelyCupOfCoffee · 17/06/2013 17:12

Aoibheann/Aoibhinn - eeveen ? no tbh don't like it// Prefer Evelyn
Aurelia/Aurora - no, awful.
Allegra - I like it.

Anais - no, way too problematic
Ariadne - I like this
Athena - I like it. Also like Althea and Alethea
Camilla - mm ok I guess.
Cecilia/ Cecily - I like both
Constance - no, very harsh and unattractive
Cordelia - I like it, lots of nns
Elodie - no, terrible, keep seeing it on mn
Eugenia - like it
Hebe - no. heebee geebeez
Helena - alright, pronunciation will always be open to several interpretations so I prefer Elena
Henrietta - yuck
Hermione - see above
Imogen - I like it
Joan - kind of surprising myself here but I like it. Also like Jane!
Juno - sort of like this. I think of sean O'Casey play though. not the film
Lorelai - no, didn't she walk into the sea and die?
Mariana - I like the simplicity of just Marianne
Mirabel - yeh I like it.
Ottilie - dreadful. A truly hideous name, right up there with constance imo. Very mumsnetty both of them though!
Peony - eh no.
Persephone -no, hang on, was it Persephone who walked into the sea and died. terribly ugly
Philippa - ok, but bland
Thalia - reminds me of labia
Tallulah -no, too slebby
Tolmiea/Tolmeia - what?
Valentina - hmm, depends, what's your sur name. If it is tompkinson or something embarrassingly down to earth then NO
Viola - no. she'd be called trombone all through school, or double bass.

And DH likes:
Emma - pretty. the announcement moment is underwhelming. eg "the baby's name is............ emma". oh. but the name is very nice and I prefer it to Thalia and Tallulah and tolmiea Confused
Hannah - prefer Anna
Lily -no done to DEATH at this point. My dd is 11 and I wouldn't consider it 11 years ago cos it was too popular.
hmm

Dana ha ha.. I think Dana international.

As you can see there's not much overlap... I agree! your tastes are very different. He likes normal names that are currently popular. So, my advice is to tweak things that are very familiar to him. what about Anya, Julia, Juliet, Louisa, Clara

I can see both sides here, your husbands suggestions are boring imo and yours are trying just a little bit too hard to be different. Reminds me of mine and my x's lists to be honest. We eventually found an overlap. It was similar. he wanted a normal classic name and I was suggesting things like Dahlia and Azalea. His face!!

What does he think of longer names like Elizabeth/Catherine/Margaret that have lots of nick names?

I suspect you are automatically ruling out anything in the top 100, but I don't believe there's nothing there you like! I think you should go back over the list and pick something that is less try hard but still very pretty like Lydia. That's just a suggestion. There are a couple out there yes, but it's not a name I've come across 2 or 3 in a class. It's been very steady compared with some other names. What about Susie it's sufficiently like Sophie to sound familiar to him, but a baby Susie would be unusual and refreshing.

Hth a bit. Good luck.

I thought the dots were to show us that one ds was theo for short and the other was Al for short.

bugsybill · 17/06/2013 23:43

I think your names are too different and unusual for your dh.

From your list the least unusual are:
Imogen
Helena
Phillipa
Juno
Mariana
Elodie
Joan

You also said you liked Beatrice so include that too.

Show him that list and see what he says.

Also if he like Emma, Hannah and lily maybe you could find something like these names but different. Lilith, Anya, Emerald?

Fraxinus · 18/06/2013 00:19

Have you introduced your oh to the idea that top 10 names might not be a great idea? Perhaps he would enjoy playing with the dark greener name popularity site, and you can see what names are a mathematical compromise.

So lily 4000+ in 2010. Allegra 48 in 2010.

Maybe look for names around the 250 mark?

Justfornowitwilldo · 18/06/2013 00:59

Your names are much nicer Grin

Arwhen · 18/06/2013 08:07

Fraxinus Thanks for the link to that site, I didn't know it existed!
Littlecherub, thanks for trying again - have added Edith and Rosalind.
Sleepycat I like Rosamund and Frances; had considered Felicity but I know two toddler aged ones around here so a bit too popular for my liking...
bugsy I've given him my entire list and told him to 'edit' it to his liking, but to at least give all names due consideration. Not sure what he'll make of it!
Justfornowit - thanks!! Grin
